Anyone know how to determine pitch of sprocket

  1. Dear All

    Im wishing to replace my front sprocket on my 796 and struggling to determine what the pitch of the old sprocket is it's a DiD chain which is in good condition and the sprocket seems to have nothing marked at all... The renthal replacement seems to have a choice of 14 teeth and a pitch of either 520 or 525 ?

  3. The dimensions of a sprocket can be calculated as follows, where P is the pitch of the chain, and N is the number of teeth on the sprocket;
    Pitch Diameter = P ÷ sin (180° ÷ N)

    Outside Diameter = P × (0.6 + cot ( 180° ÷ N) )

    Sprocket thickness = 0.93 × Roller Width - 0.006"

  6. I don't think it is stamped on the chain, but my eyesight is not perfect and all I know is that mine is DID, stamped on the sideplates, or at least some of them. There is some quite good info on the subject of chains in general at this website:

    The "Pitch" identifies the distance between the pins, and is the same I think for all "50" size chains, including 520 and 525 (which I reckon mine is - 520 realy is quite "thin"). So the "pitch" of the sprocket will I think be the same, but the important thing will be the thickness of it, and the measurements given by PeterT will be a good way to check the existing sprocket - to double-check you can also look at the width of the chain measured on the inside between the sideplates (should be 6.35mm for 520 or 7.95 mm for 525, if the table at that website is correct).
     
  7. It may not be on the chain but it is almost certainly on the rear sprocket therefore get the pitch from that and count the teeth on the front then you have all the detail needed
     
  8. FYI chains used to be quoted in Imperial sizes. ie 1/2" x 1/4", 1/2" x 3/8", 5/8" x 1/4", 5/8" x 3/8", etc.
    The modern sizing is still imperial but is quoted in multiples of 1/8".
    So a 420 = 4/8 x 2/8 = 1/2" x 1/4"
    520 = 5/8 x 2/8= 5/8/" x 1/4"
    525 = 5/8 x 2.5/8" = 5/8" x 5/16"
    530 = 5/8" x 3/8"
    etc

    After a good clean up I have found 059.1A on the old front sprocket... Is this of use..

    I must apologise for I have a slight disability and making sense of things can be very difficult at times.. I truly love tinkering with my Ducatis though it might take me a bit longer than most... I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding ...
