1200 Apologies If I'm Going Crazy.. My Battery...

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Teetheowl, Oct 3, 2016.

  1. Hello good folks of the forum..

Right, it's getting cold out there, the bike won't be used as much when it's icy....

So, charging the Multistrada (2012) battery.. I've got an old oxford optimiser charger, which I've had for about 10 years. It still works fine, no bother... BUT... Is it possible to use the round hella/din sockets at the either side of the seat (on the outside of the bike) with an adapter to fit my charger to charge my battery or not?

I've read contrasting stories about it.... That's all.

    Cheers.

  2. I know the Beemers have the Canbus system thing... Wondered if it worked on the strada too...

  3. You cant charge the battery through the Hella accessory sockets, the best and safest way is to connect fly leads directly to the battery for the charger. Also newer chargers are more intelligent nowadays and will cycle to battery rather than just pump juice into it, so a new charger could be an idea and will prolong the life of the battery.

  4. Hella connectors are only live when the ignition is on unless you rewire one of them direct to the battery.
The ctek range of chargers is a good shout my ctek 3.6 has been keeping my car and bike batteries in good nick for years.

All the oxford ones (they were cheapies) I had before either expired or tries to cook batteries if not monitired

  5. Ah, cool.
Cheers for that folks... Looks like I'll be buying a new charger then.

    :)

  6. From what people have told me, if you get an Optimate 4 dual charger and set it to canbus, you can charge a BMW through the hella socket, so I would guess and I mean guess, you could charge a Ducati through a hella socket as well.

  7. Exactly, Broke.
    That's what I mean...

    It's confusing.
I've emailed a Ducati dealer this morning and I was awaiting a reply.

  8. I had a BMW S1000XR canbus....Bought an Optimate 4 Canbus charger, and the BMW charged through the 12V socket, but you can't do that on the multistrada as the socket is switched. The lead that the Optimate 4 comes with connects directly to the Multistrada battery......from there i've fed the cable out to the rear foot rest....easy peasy to charge...no need to take seat off.

  9. Thing is @rob lewis, if you connect directly to the battery on the Ducati, you don't need a canbus charger.

  10. p.s. If you can charge through a hella port, you won't need a tail hanging out from under the seat either.

  11. cheers but like i said i have an optimate 4 ( which is switchable / dual battery optimizer) so i use the other lead supplied connected to the battery......( i don't charge through the canbus )...thanks for the heads up tho

  12. or you could buy the Ducati charger that fits in the DDA port under the seat

  13. I've had a mail from the local dealer to me, I have to call them tomorrow to 'discuss 2 options'.
