1200 Argh! Gear Change Stuck In 3rd And Above

  1. Anyone any ideas on this problem at all?
I went to change down as approaching a set of lights on the way home and the gear lever went down to third normally but will not go beyond that. It is completely solid and locked out going down to 2-N-1. There is no give in it at all, not like its even trying to change down.
Up seems ok and feels completely normal 3rd, 4th and 5th tested - didn't get up into 6th nursing it back home. Checked the gear linkage and all seems fine, nothing ceased up - shouldn't be its just been serviced at Lougi last week.
Clutch is all fine, had to use it extensively to get back the last couple of miles.

I guess I may be calling on my warranty in the morning, not even made it a year into owning it :(

  2. Quick addition.

Just had a play with the bike while its in my garage. Have managed to get it down into 1st, 2nd and N - but the lever is really "floppy" to shift, its like its clicking up into gear then dropping down again loose.

  3. Had similar on my 999S. No gears below 3rd.

The selector return spring had snapped. £6 part to replace but around 4 hours labour, identifying the fault, fishing out the broken bits, replacing with a new spring, etc.

I was quoted two hours for the job, I guess the dealer was having a slow day and needed to fill his hours quota

  4. Gear Lever Return spring? Known to fail. If the lever drops down by itself try some rubber bands to hold it up until you can get to a dealer (number of PO red rubber bands needed is very trial and error). The return spring is inside the gearbox - not a quick job.

  5. Lets just hope if it is snapped that the broken off piece hasn't had a wiz around the inside of the gears and bearings.

  6. Its going into Luigi tomorrow morning. Can that happen? I assumed the spring would be outside the main gearbox part...

  7. It can if you take it there ;) but seriously, good luck with the fix!

  8. The spring is on the mechanism just under the alternator cover and would be an easy fix if you didn't have to take the flywheel off to get at it.

  9. Was looking at the maintenance manual and thought "is that it?" when that dawned on me. Got a warranty, may as well use it! :D
Don't envy Rich's week, it was wall to wall with bikes in LM this morning

  10. Best of luck, don't want to be a doom monger and hopefully this will not be the case but I have heard stories of warranty work not going to the top of the "to do" list.

  12. Just a thought....is the chain too tight?
This has some 'orrible symptoms on gear selection.

  13. No sadly wasn't that. Had all that adjusted as part of the service just two weeks ago and I have been checking my chain regular doing the lube and stuff at least weekly being as its been used all winter. This is the gear lever drops down after you make a selection when going up through the gears - then you can't change down unless you lift it up a bit and manage to get it to hold.

Think of something like a ratchet with your socket set when you are trying to undo a bolt already loose. The ratchet clicks forward but then spins the bolt back if you let go of it.
