Association Of British Insurers Updates Write Off Categories

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Android853sp, Dec 6, 2017.

  1. I was idly perusing the internet as you do and learnt that as of the 1st November 2017, the ABI amended the insurance vehicle write off categories to more accurately reflect structural damage.
The A and B categories remain unchanged but C has become S to describe uneconomical to repair structural damage which is notifiable to the DVLA but can be professionally repaired and put back on the road and D has become N to describe uneconomical repair that is not structural and not notifiable to the DVLA. Category N non structural damage could include damage to brakes. This is the source of my summary https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/know-how/what-is-an-insurance-write-off/ Andy

  2. Makes a lot of sense. I had my 848 get written of as a cat c because the Termis got bent but when it came to selling it people were asking about frame damage etc.

  3. Some may have noticed and others might not buy one but the terms for damaged vehicles has changed from the 1st October this year. I only found this out myself today.

    We used to have A B C D and now they are called A B S N
    • A: Scrap....Old Cat A
    • B: Break....Old Cat B
    • S: Structurally damaged repairable.....Old Cat C
    • N: Non-structurally damaged repairable...Old Cat D

  4. There’s a thread merge to be had here somewhere.

Glad to see the change though. Makes things clearer to the buyer.

  5. Apologies if it's already been done as a thread
