So, last year it was death by helicopter, before that, death by deep fried Mars Bars / alcohol intake. This year it's runaway bin-collection lorry. I was thinking, what next....Ebola? Lo and behold...... Ebola case confirmed in Glasgow hospital BBC News - Ebola case confirmed in Glasgow hospital Whatever next???
wasn't a business class flight. Did she have to put her tray table away and seat back up. Hope the lady makes a speedy recovery
Its a strange place to live, its a lot better than it used to be when I was a kid it really was No Mean City, going out at night almost anywhere was risky. The city was dirty and the whole place black and totally overrun with bloody starlings shitting everywhre. A lot has been done since then to clean it up both in attitude and physical appearance. The gangs (such as there are) are confined to areas you would not want to go to anyway and bigotry much reduced. Its got some tremendous pieces of Victorian architecture but the city has had some horrendous things inflicted on it by planners (motorway up the center of the city, isolating the West End and turning the East into a total abortion). Many fantastic buildings knocked down in the name of progress. St Enoch hotel and Charing Cross Post Office to name 2. City at least avoided the Bruce plan where the Cooncil wanted to tear down every last building and replace with high rise............The English saved us from that. Its not a patch on Edinburgh never will be, its history is industrial............it was once the second city of Empire. I do love the self deprecating humor that the Scots have in general but Weegies excel at, especially in adversity. A lot who condem it don't understand it and stay in shit holes far worse than Glasgow.................but Heh its got a reputation. Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story My mother in law (who can get her medical conditions confused from time to time), was convinced that the EColi scare in the athlete's village at the beginning of the games was an Ebola outbreak.
There was an excellent episode of the BBC2 series The Secret History of our Streets on Glasgow, focusing on its post-war history, regeneration, architecture etc: BBC Two - The Secret History of Our Streets, Series 2, Duke Street, Glasgow Not currently available on iPlayer, but worth keeping an eye out for the inevitable repeats.
