The Barnett. Had the stainless tipped Barnett basket fitted to mine on Rich Lewelyn's recommendation at Louigi Moto. Paired with DP plates. He said don't bother with the 48 tooth baskets. That's good enough for me. The Barnet is slightly louder but it'll stay that way instead of getting steadily noisier like a standard basket. Can't say how long it'll last yet but the OE basket was shagged at 15K and it was growly and notchy at 13.
I also have the alloy Barnett basket with stainless inserts which was installed at 14k miles after the original steel Ducati was notched and shagged. The Barnett is indeed louder due to the clearances between the plate tangs and the basket being at the limit specified by Ducati from first installation, this limit seems a little arbitrary BTW. It is now past 38k miles using Barnett, Ducati and Newfren alloy plates. The basket has no wear or notching at all and is pretty much unworn. Not sure the extra clearance helps cheap plates like the Newfren last that well, they don't have the thickened tangs of OEM alloy plates. They don't seem to last as long although the reason I have replaced them has always been the noise rather than friction material wear.
Dont't mean to highjack the OP but @Gimlet @Denzil the Ducati, where did you buy your Barnett parts ? I just looked on a few UK web sites and they don't seem to offer the basket. Barnett in the US quote a price of $250 which I guess you need to add UK import tax and postage. Andy
Maybe that's why Rich specced DP plates with the Barnet basket. Andy, Louigi Moto supplied mine as the clutch was fitted as part of a service. It wasn't cheap but if it significantly outlasts a standard basket then it horses for courses. Give Rich a bell, he'll be able to lay his hands on one.
Andy, I bought mine from Naef Cycle with Barnett springs, caps, and a full set of plates $330 all in with £55.48 import duty to be paid to the post office before they would deliver (they also included a small packet of gummy bears in the package). At the time (2007 IIRC) the ex rate was $1.92 to the pound, the same basket was retailing in the uk at something like £200 or the equivalent of $390. You can get the baskets on ebay now with the revised stainless inserts for around £125 from US (RRP is $250 but no one sells them for that much on ebay). The plate sets are around £100
I like the 48 tooth basket although the plates a lot more money and finding them isnt easy . Makes a different noise to the 12 tang one some like it some dont but it looks and works fantastic .
I got mine from over here: www.klemencic-bikes.si not a duc dealer the got a lot of Barnett stuff and Vic is just an encyclopedia on 2 legs. the cost was 292.- eur
