I've got a 2016 DVT with Road Angel Bike Trac and if I don't ride her for 3-5 weeks, she won't start anymore. She's already on the second battery after the first one was replaced on warranty since it was defective. Thought maybe the tracker device sucks the battery dry (she is parked in a garage so maybe trying to find signal the whole time?). Anyone else have the same problem? Or know about a better battery upgrade?
You need a fibreglass mat acid battery and you need to leave it on a trickle charger. The bike trak will drain the battery if you don't. Andy
Thanks Andy - any particular recommendation on the Battery? It's a shared garage without electricity plugs so trickle charger not an option. Also pissed me off that it would be required since my brother's Kawasaki can spend all winter in the garage and start immediately...
All lead acid batteries continue to discharge the moment there is a current drain even when whatever causes the drain is switched off so your brother and his Kawasaki have been lucky. You have an always on electronics package for the ecu to maintain your settings in addition to the Bike Trak so your battery is going to discharge if you don't ride it for periods of up to 5 weeks. You can buy a small solar panel charger that was developed for the caravanning world, not expensive but does require natural light. It will provide enough background trickle charge to keep your battery topped up. Andy
It's the tracker sucking amps. They will flatten a car battery in 28 or so days, so a bike one is probably quicker
Optimate is your only real option. Or at least charge it the night before you know you will use it, if it's a irregular use bike
Connect a second battery in Parallel (MUST BE in parallel NOT in series) - same voltage but more Amps so should last longer.
Please make sure the leads are fused in case it gets shorted... Further it's almost definitely the tracker. Solar charger is a great idea. Make sure it's a quality one with over voltage protection and a shunt diode to prevent drain at night.
I also leave my bike in a garage with no power. Bought this from Amazon, I plug my optimate into it once a week to keep battery charged. Will power optimate for up to 12 hours on one charge. 12v 900A Portable Power Pack Emergency Jumpstart Inverter Air Compressor booster.
Wow.... that's a lot of wasted energy.... the battery idea was better. Just make sure it's fused and a large wattage 10 Ohm resistor (in series) just to be safe. What you don't want is a discharged bike battery, say 10.5V being connector to a large car battery at 13V.. with a big lead (no resistance) that's going to be a huge current.
