998 Battery Tray - Reg Mounting/heatsink

  1. Seems to be a varying thought on this, Ive put 998 but its the same as 996r, my bike came with the regulator mounted to the aluminium plate, with the plastic tray at the back - so aluminium sandwiched between the reg and the tray. It doesnt quite fit perfectly doing this, but thats how the earlier bikes were and the alumiun acts as a heatsink for the reg.

My mates 996r is the same fitting.

In the parts manual, the aluminium goes behind the tray - so the reg is mounted directly to the plastic tray, and there is an airgap and the alumiunium plate - it fits really nicely this way, and there are lugs behind the tray that act as a spacer - this would shield the exhaust heat away from the reg.

I found a pic of an 'untouched' bike online and its fitted behind the tray, and personally I think thats the correct way - but a specialist said it should be directly behind the reg.

Has anyone got a definitive answer here or a pic of an untouched bike with the panel off or anything?
