Hello, can anyone advise on the best oil (grade and make) for a 2001 748? I have heard it is best to go for a thicker oil to help with leaving a film on the rocker arms. Also any advice on best oil filter make to get? Any help would be great thanks. Mark
Have used k&n also Mahle filters with 15w50 oil, there will be many oil suggestions, I along with many others use Motul 300v. Steve
Thanks a lot for the info will get some ordered. Never done my own oil change and filter so hope it's not too bad and I do not see any flaky chrome pieces!
Get one of these type filter tools. Doesn't have to come from Halfords, but you want this type. http://www.halfords.com/workshop-to...lUQ1OQwH5-wSzbLY0hTe6T6Wna9Mcq-LKhhoCV4Xw_wcB
I got Motul 7100 fully synthetic plus a HiFlo filter for 40 quid or so delivered, from M&P. The 7100 is not a racing oil but intended for road bikes and, accordingly, has additives for anti-corrosion etc in it. Horses for courses... The HiFlo filter is the same as the K&N but without the nut welded on it. If you read studies on oil, fully synthetic is way better than mineral or semi synthetic and the two makes that stand out as consistently best at everything are Mobil One and Motul.
You mean and the two makes who spend the most on advertising are..... If the oils are the same API specs as other cheaper oils then they are very unlikely to be any better, but the advertising budget makes people put things like the above quote on forums.
Nothing to do with advertising, Bob. This is what I gleaned from a published study I read a few months ago and is based on properly conducted lab tests on a number of different motorcycle-specific oils. Motul and Mobil One consistently did well in all the parameters and fully synthetic oils were all significantly better then mineral or semi.
http://americasoil.biz/files/g2156_A_study_of_Motorcycle_Oils.pdf Well, I guess it was something to do with advertising, as the study was produced by Amsoil. Take the Amsoil out of the equation though and you are left with Motul and Mobil One as the standout products. I too have never been one for advertising hype and used Halfords in my bike last time and Synta Gold, which is an oil produced for VW before that. All fully synth with top specs though. I wasn't convinced about the need for Motorcycle-specific oil in our dry clutch Ducatis either but the argument that they are formulated to take into account our seasonal use, so have a different mix of additives, has swayed me. Also, the cherry-red Motul is nice and easy to see in the sight-glass Till it goes black that is...
I will totally agree with you that a synthetic oil is the best protection that one can have, not necessarily due to just the lubrication properties, but also for the protection that it offers should the oil overheat. I am sceptical about any supposed independent tests carried out on oils, especially in the US where very different oils are available to Europe. The word independent is a strange one, as I don't believe anyone is going to use very expensive equipment and lab time for free, someone will be paying for it. The makers name thing is a little more vague, I will accept that a pair of Nike trainers is better than a pair of China ebay trainers and I would expect to pay a premium for the Nike ones, but trainers are not made to an international standard whereas oil is. If I buy synthetic oil in a viscosity that I want and it conforms to API SF (or SG or later) then any other oil that conforms to that testing standard will be hardly any different. The difference might mean that one wears out at a theoretical 468,000 miles and the other 20 miles later, you can have a make a far bigger effect on the wear in your engine by the way you treat it. Someone on here suggested using a cheap mineral flushing oil for 500 miles, that would probably take another 100,000 miles of the theoretical life of 468,000 miles, and then it would contaminate the nice oil that was used for a few oil changes afterwards, and the point was to do something good for the engine! Can anyone show me an engine that has worn bores and main bearings that are worn out because they used a quality Halfords oil rather than Motul? I very much doubt it.
