He all have 996,that frame needs re doing, been told its not possible to get it factory finish, but can some tell me some who can either powder coat back to ome grey/bronze satin or some who can repaint frame to ome spc??...help would be great
im in north shropshire, would like it back to ome finish has any one had there done and happy with finish?
you'll struggle to get a powder coat OEM colour……..even the red is difficult to copy…….id go for paint at a quality place near you…there is a RAL code for the original colour...
If you can get the paint code you should be able to get that in powder as well. I got my little 1960 done to exact match in powder and I got a rattle can of paint knocked up as well. All from my local helpful powder coaters, mind you they are the company who do all the coating for Aston Martin so not a back street set up.
well look at how many have tried to copy the red frame colour and its just not quite there. Even the company jhp use its not quite right……and then anything can be made up but there is usually a minimum amount for an order which will do 10 frames or more...
My frame is painted in a RAL colour and whilst close it is not an exact match for the Ducati red. I cannot remember the number but a visit to the powdercoaters will get you the required samples. As far as I know there is no RAL colour that exactly matches the Ducati Red, most tend to have a more orangey element to them.
I was told that they use Reddich shotblasting but it wasnt by JHP but one of the chaps at Reddich a few years ago when I took my subframe into them. Not sure if true but they are good. Bournes in Digbeth, Birmingham were once pretty crap but have twice recently amazed me with flawless work on complicated pieces. Good chap there now that listens and knows what hes doing. They have a very close bronze colour but its not quite the same. They also do plenty of bike frames and wheels and have done for many years. Just thought I would put that out there in case its any use to anyone.
I have had 2 frames powder coated and on both occasions they ended up to orange, to get an exact match they need to be painted. Powder coated Painted And this was a 916 frame that I had coated, different Powdercoasters but same orangey look. And that after using RAL colour cards to get as close as possible
^^^ Unfortunately very true, most colour cards are not quite as accurate as you might hope. I went for what I would call the only true red using the RAL chart and it is a shade or two out, but it is Red and not Orange. Most RAL Red's seen to be very Orange in nature.
The painted frame has lasted well, we just keyed powder coating and then painted straight over so the odd chip only shows the orange underneath
As it 'appens I have just been to my local powder coaters with a wheel. While I was there I had a look through his red cards, closest I could see was RAL 3020G. Dunno if this helps...!
^^^ I would say that was the one that I chose for my frame, it's described as Traffic Red. It is not as Orangey as it looks, viewed from my screen anyway. You really need to see a finished sample to decide
