Planning another trip to Scotland and following my recent rear wheel puncture in the middle of rural Scotlandshire, I was looking at this product, on the face of it, it looks pretty good, any one used it or have any experience of it? Thanks in advance
I watched it demonstrated at Stafford show, initially I thought it looked very good until I thought about it a little more, the demonstrator always pulls the nail out from the bottom presumably where the fluid is sitting but at the side of the road it isn't practical to do that you would most likely remove the nail or whatever from higher up in the tire nearer the top for access and with the fluid sat at the bottom i'm not sure whether it would seal, If something penetrated the tire and the object didn't stay in the tire while on the move then the sealant should seal it up but only in the center of the tread and not to the side. I'm sure others will have different opinions but these are my thoughts. Also how does it affect the balance of the wheel? Steve
If this is Ultraseal, I have used it without ill effect. Doesn't always work. It seems as if every time I don't put it in, I get a puncture. The guys who change the tyres don't like it much, as it is messy. I had a puncture at Altnaharra a month ago and I could have done with it.
I've used slime which i think is similar , the idea is centrifugal force spreads the fluid across the tyre as your riding an seals the hole unless it's in your side wall . I have plugs with co2 canisters to get me home .
If you do go down this route and I have no reason to dissuade you (girlfriend has it in the rear tyre of her Diavel after 5 punctures !) make sure you get a water based product as it is easier to clean the inside of the rim. @Arson is right in that tyre fitters are not fans of the stuff because it is messy. Years ago I bought an 851,..that was my first mistake!! ....hated it and chopped it in for one of the first round headlamp Fireblade's My second mistake was getting rid of the 851, their worth a bloody fortune now!! anyhow I digress..... When I picked up the 851 and rode it home, I thought I'd open it up a bit along a nice stretch of local road I know, all was going well until I was just passing 80 mph and this massive vibration started shaking the front end of the bike, I mean so bad that the mirrors dropped right down out of position and it was bloody dangerous even just trying to hang on to the bike! It obviously seemed like a front wheel balance problem, but really, really bad. I took the front wheel off and took it to a local tyre depot to get the balance checked, basically the guy had about 3 goes at balancing it and still couldn't get it right, so he decided to take the tyre off and investigate further. We were both amazed when we found about a pint of tyre seal in the front tyre, basically it was hitting a certain speed ( about 80 mph ) and then kind of catching up with itself and making the front wheel massivley out of balance! Cleaned it out, balanced it normally and no problems after that, so I'm not a fan of the stuff, plus tyre fitters won't repair a tyre if its had the stuff in, they just can't be bothered with cleaning the mess out. Some of the guys I ride with have had good results with these Stop n Go tyre pluggers, might be worth looking at? https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/3719482591...=9046787&device=c&campaignid=856327663&crdt=0
Poucher makes a very good point, we were advised to only use, in our case Ultraseal, in the rear tyre. The Diavel has done probably 2000 miles since having it done and so far so good and in fact I'd say the rear tyre maintains pressure a lot better than it did before. I have one of these under the seat of the Multistrada for emergencies, http://www.dynaplug-uk.com/dynaplug-c-22/dynaplug-pro-stainless-steel-tubeless-tyre-repair-kit-p-101, and found it very easy to use. There is a cheaper aluminium version. Andy
