Hi Team, I am having trouble with my front brakes binding! Goldline calipers on a 1992 900ss. I have pulled the calipers apart, cleaned them and fitted new seals etc. It has made no difference what's so ever!! I assumed the problem would be the caliper pistons sticking but, on reassembley I made sure they were fitted correctly and slid into place easily. Are their other reasons that can cause brakes to bind? Cleaned the pads and discs to!!
Is your lever adjustment dragging on the brakes? I did the same as you for an MOT. Complete caliper strip and rebuild with fresh fluid etc... It passed MOT but the guy showed it was still ever so slightly binding on his tester but not enough to fail Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Did you clean out the seal groove\s fully and lubricate the pistons with Red brake grease? Corrosion can build up behind the seals and if the grooves are not fully cleaned out it will cause the pistons to bind. Brake grease makes a lot of difference to helping the pistons slide in and out and it is compatible with normal brake fluids. Failing that I would strip and check the master cylinder as above and consider cleaning and greasing the components or fitting a new seal kit after a full clean. One other possible cause of drag is improper adjustment of the pin that bears on the master cylinder piston. If it is adjusted incorrectly it can cause drag especially when the brakes get hot. I had this on a 748SPS and it almost locked up the front brake when they started to get hot.
Also make sure the reservoir isn't overfilled......it needs an air space. You find that out when you top up the fluid past maximum when worn pads are in place, then fit new pads.
I'm wondering whether I should have used red grease and serviced the master cylinder. Time to pull it all apart again! Master cylinder isn't to full either but thanks for the suggestions.
Do you find that the brakes are binding when you move the bike around when cold or is it only when they've heated up? Many reasons possible (and most already already suggested), could be pushrod adjusted with too little play on m/cylinder as said or could be a partially blocked return port also on m/cylinder.
