996 Biposto Seat Hooks

  1. Hey

My passenger seat I bought 2nd hand with the seat unit has 2 large metal hooks that attached where the strap is underneath the seat. I've looked on-line at other seats and they are not there. What's the point in them and do I need them? Currently the stop the seat fitting on the subframe so they are about to get shelved.

    TIA

  2. not sure what you mean buy large, but my 748 has one hook that is for a helmet.. could this be what you have?

  3. I guess size is relative. About 2". Does yours point forward or backwards?

  4. bit personal...

  5. It fell off I think...

  6. :D its just a lil carabina type thing that you put the d rings of ya lid over and then shut ya seat unit...with idea being that no one can crack the seat unit and steal ya 500 squid lid!

  7. Later model bipostos (996 on, I think) had these extra hooks to hold the seat on more securely, maybe some of the earlier ones fell off?

  8. Ok, so should they point forward?

  9. Found it on a parts list, they point forward, to be honest i think i'll just shelve it. Seems like needless weight.

  10. The hooks are for locking the seat in place and to help stop it tilting from side to side. You push the seat down engage the hooks and then pull it back and that locks the seat fully.

If you just push the seat down it will not lock as the hooks prevent this, personally I would keep them.

  11. How does pulling it back engage them when the hooks point forward?

  12. The hooks need to engage on the subframe lugs and although it's a long time since I used a biposto seat you should find it will be the only way it will allow the seat to lock down properly. You pull the seat back and push the seat over the lugs and then lock the seat in place by pushing it forward and down.

The subframe bears a lot of weight two up and the rear passengers weight is directly over the rear of the subframe where leverage action would be greater and I guess that is why Ducati started to use these hooks to help locate the seat and to stop the seat from rocking side to side and possibly to take some strain off the seat pad.

Early biposto seat pads don't have the lugs though.
