916 Biposto To Mono Conversion

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Shorty4045, Oct 12, 2020.

  1. I’ve decided that I’d like to convert my 916 from Biposto to Mono and so have researched all the options

The simplest way would be to reuse the biposto subframe but the holes where the rear foot pegs attach would remain visible which I’d prefer not to see. So I decided to do it properly and source OEM parts where possible

First acquisition was a seat from @JoeC

Minus the seat pad and lights ...

Next up was the subframe. Turns out there are two versions depending on which ECU you have P8 or 1.6M ECU
I bought the correct 1.6M frame from @final_edition

Next up was the mono seat which differs from the front biposto seat with a higher profile at the back. Found one on EBay

The only remaining major part I needed was the mono undertray (I’m told you can reuse the biposto one but I didn’t want to make any non reversible alterations to the original seat which I will keep so the bike can be returned to stock in future) Anyone that has looked for mono undertray’s recently will find they are not cheap, typically £190 to £300 whereas you can get a biposto version for £25. Demand and supply in action!
Anyway I got lucky and I found one on eBay for £50 ....

There are a number of pads, brackets, fitted mesh parts, which Craig at Moto Rapido is sourcing for me.

In the meantime the seat is being repainted to the correct shade of yellow. Before and after pics to follow once fitted .....

  2. if i remember correctly the wire loom is to short for the mono conversion from the ecu.

you might have to make it longer or get a new loom.

  4. Thanks Cookster, haven’t got round to it yet so you will probably be right :(

  5. if the Bip can be made to fit and costs half as much, why not buy one of those to mod?

  6. You’re right and that was the plan if I couldn’t find a cheap one, but for an extra £20 I’d rather have the correct part.

  8. You can also fit a rear section of a Mono to the wiring loom of a Biposto as the rear section of the Mono wiring loom is much longer. You will need the correct type as there are some differences. It's a long job to lengthen the rear wiring loom.

  9. I did this on my old bike, I was able to get almost everything to fit except the wire for the air temp sensor at the front, so I just soldered in some extra wire and heat shrinked it after, worked fine.

  12. Ironically when i advertised my biposto it was fitted with a mono seat inc loom and all those parts you had to source except the subframe ,it was as it came when i bought it
Few comments saying i should change it back ! Personally i think the twin seats spoils the whole look of the bike

  14. So the seat came back from the painters

And as Cookster predicted the wiring loom was too short to fit the ECU so the bike was sent to Ray Petty at Meccanica to have the loom extended.
Once completed I arranged for a courier company to collect and deliver the bike.
Unfortunately they dropped the bike whilst loading it into their van :(
So it’s being repaired/ repainted and whilst at Mechanica Ray is tidying it up :)

Radiator was replaced some time ago but with a black one for some reason. Ray has had it painted silver as it should be
