Black Paint - Satin ?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Mr-Superlight, Dec 12, 2018.

  1. Planning to continue the tidy up of my 1996 SL over the next few weeks and months and a glaringly scruffy issue is the thin black paint on the bars etc. this is very dull and light rust is visible through it. Anyone suggest appropriate paint for this - I'm thinking a satin type finish is right but would appreciate advice here.

  2. i always use Plasti -Kote BBQ satin finish.

  3. Ok thanks for that. Will source some paint although any painting over the next few weeks will prob need to be done inside as it will be too cold in the garage so I may wait until a spell of warmer slightly milder temps.

  4. ECP usually have four or five different satin black aerosols in stock. Typically around £3.50 -£4 with their many and varied discount code “sales”. I like the Simoniz satin Matt black 400ml for good all-round performance, decent spray atomisation without spatter and works until the paint runs out. I avoid the “tough” paint versions as they just don’t spray as well and seem to take days before they harden fully.
If I was doing bars etc. though I would get them powder coated somewhere trustworthy that specialises in bike parts.

  5. I'm not that keen on powdercoat for things like the bars as to me it gives a rather thick and glossy look. Paint would enable me to do the parts needing done myself to.

  6. That’s what I was alluding to with the last bit of my post. The good ones understand how to bring the gloss levels down and keep the coating thin enough to look factory. I like the resilience of powder coating for stuff like this, but am with you on the convenience of DIY’ing with an aerosol.
