I have a 2000 748S that has a standard clutch. When the bike gets hot it is difficult to pull away from a stop in 1st gear. First time it happened I thought I had it in 2nd gear. This only happens when hot. When leaving home it pulls away nicely. 10 minutes down the road its gets sluggish. Any idea why this is happening?
When was the last time the clutch was cleaned out? Not saying this is the cause of the problem but it may be worth removing the cover, pressure plate and all the clutch plates, cleaning out all dust inside, checking over the state of the clutch and making sure it's all within tolerance, cleaning any rust off the steel pates and/or basket and then reassembling (assuming everything is within working tolerance). Its a 60 min job and no special tools required.
When did you last change the clutch fluid? If it has any air or moisture absorbed into it you'll get problems as the engine warms up.
Clutch and basket was changed last year. I have had it apart and cleaned which I think when the problem may have started. All plates were kept in order.
Def sounds clutch related and more plates than anything else given symptoms get worse with heat ie suggests binding through heat cycles etc
in that case, 2 things:- did you align your pressure plate with your drum? - see picture below - notched spring post aligns with triangle/arrow on pressure plate. also, have you got std clutch cover and have you removed the standard rubber "gasket"?
Yes pressure plate arrow is lined up with notched spring post & I have the standard rubber gasket and clutch cover. The gasket is damaged and does not have the collets
I don't understand why this would be a clutch thing. You say that when it's hot, it bogs down and you can't get it off the line (as if in 2nd gear). Sounds like a lack of power when it's warmed up....
the reason I mention the rubber gasket is that the heads of the spring caps can start to kiss the inside face of a std clutch cover if this is missed out which would give that feeling of "bogging down" at low revs when pulling away. Even the omission of the collets might have a similar effect - very easy to check as you would have witness marks on the inside of the clutch cover.
Good point. It was my first thought - clutch - as that’s what came into my head when reading the problem however, it may be nothing to do with that, some more info/detailed description would help decide.
@Baddad - can you give us more info...? Did you mention the clutch in your OP because you think its that? Why...?
