Hi Team, My front brakes are binding!! The calipers need a rebuild! anyone attempted this? Where did you get the seal kits From? I have taken the calipers off the bike leaving the brake hose attached and pushed the pistons out as much as I dare, then tried to clean them. This hasn't worked!! I have scrubbed the pads and discs to. Still no relief!! Any help appreciated.
If you do approach a KTM dealer, I'd advise you do your research first so when asked which model you have you can lie convincingly. The dealer I approached blanked me. Andy
CountCoupe, I have a genuine Brembo seal kit I picked up on ebay, I will get you the part number. As stated KTM bikes used the same Brembo brakes, this is where I have got rebuild kits previously as Ducati don't stock them. Sure it was one of the KTM DUKES from the 90's that had the coffin style masters and 40mm calipers. Anyway the pistons are expensive so it may be cheaper to get second hand calipers...... I'll get the number for you this morning. I used Buy KTM Parts Online - OEM, Power Parts, Power Wear‎ | AMS Motorcycles
You cannot buy a rebuild kit from Ducati. Some sort of an indemnity disagreement between them and Brembo. Andy
I have done this. My ST4S had the same front brake as a KTM 690 but you need to check. My bits came in Brembo packs
Don't know if this covers your bike. If not, someone might have a more up to date copy they can post here Good luck
these chaps stock the seals: Ducati 900 SS 91-93 Parts at Wemoto - The UK's No.1 On-Line Motorcycle Parts Retailer (check the correct year)
Countcoupe, There are also these. Ducati Supersport 900 900SS Superlight 1997 Brembo front brake caliper seal kit | eBay Not OEM though. I thought there was a place in Sheffield but it might be these guys, I will have another look. Cheers Gaz
Hi Team, thanks for all the suggestions. Ordered a pattern rebuild kit from eBay! Just need to get some piston pliers!
Countcoupe, I am sure I poped mine out with a bike pump, but if you use compressed air please please be careful not to let the piston fly out and hit something or worse you, put a towel or something over it. I can't exactly remember how I did it, it was a while ago. Also think red rubber grease is the go for rebuild. Cheers Gaz
Rebuild complete. Went to hell and back bleeding the brakes! In the end they fixed themselves!!! I left the bike on its side stand for two days with only a little resistance on the brake lever and could certainly pull it all the way back to the grip. Returned for round 6 of fighting with freakin thing to find a very solid lever and very effective brakes!! Make of that what you will!
Did you have enough resistance on the lever to open the piston on the master and let the bubbles slowly rise out? Hence giving you the result you speak of?
Everything I tried still left me with a very spongy lever. The 'leaving it alone and coming back two days later' technique was the only thing that worked!!!
This all stems back from some muppet in the States rebuilding the calipers on his Ducati incorrectly. He fitted the seals the wrong way round so the fluid came out when he squeezed the lever hard enough. He had an accident and won a lawsuit against Brembo because they didn't provide fitting instructions telling him which way round to fit the seal. Brembo chucked their toys out of the pram and said that going forwards they were a non serviceable item. KTM on the other hand insist on their suppliers making their components serviceable so Brembo provide the parts to them but not Ducati.
