Cam Timing

  1. Help!

I've recently changed the camshaft rollers on my ST3. Having set the bike on its timing marks I removed the standard pulley and replaced for the alloy version. I replaced the belts and rotated the engine making sure the valves didn't hit anything. Started the bike.....seemed okay but not quite as smooth and didn't tick over as well.

Soooooo have I buggered it up???? Has my cam timing moved slightly?? Is it possible to do this in the frame??:frown: Problems with riding the bike???

Not a happy bear - bugger!

  2. Check by eye to see if the woodruff slot in the pulleys matches up with the same relative position to the belt tooth above? Possible slight difference giving an offset key effect?

  3. HOWDO!

When I replaced them I used the originals as a template trying to match like for like (Obviously not that like!) The rollers are adjustable and moved in accordance with TDC & Valve closure I believe???? Having smashed a few You Tube vids in last night I have a grasp of what they are trying to achieve, however doing it is a separate matter (But admittedly something I would like to have a go at some time.......)
I shall quote Chris (CJS) You T£$T!.....
Will have another look today then its of to the guys who know best!

  4. +1

Forgive me if this is a 'grannys sucking eggs' scenario .....

If they're adjustables, best thing to do (if you're not in a position to set them correctly) is take them off, loosen adjusters, and align the key slots AND outer teeth with the original pulleys... then tighten adjusters and refit ..... engine should at least run exactly as it was!

  5. Indeed and then, get the bike to someone who can adjust/set to optimum - otherwise what's the point of adjustable pulleys?

  6. I have set the pulley's as how I believe (There is quite a variation that can be set) and the bike starts no problem, having looked at the bike today there is limited access (Unable to remove top 2 retaining bolts) to the Horizontal valve cover due to the slight lip on the cross member. The ST3 engine heads are slightly different to the 900SS..........well frame now modded so intake valve cover can now be removed. Need access to the intake to set up the DTi. Know I hope Chris can fit me in to set the cams up (Before I get meself a dti and start playing somemore........mother!!!!!).

  7. Oh forgot to mention the originals are also adjustable (Steel) which I had to split to get the front cover plate for the alloy pulley's:rolleyes:
So having set them as per the originals I thought it would run as before but not the case.

  8. Paul, Mr Ducati only live's a stone throw away ? Sure Steve can't help you out ?
