Hi all. As you can see from my posts I'm a total newbie at motorcycle maintenance, so please be gentle and do explain any terms you drop! Periodically fired up the 1198 over the winter, bought a new battery and kept it in the house so it's fully charged.(the battery) Can line error 38. Only the yellow light come on, no neutral etc. I've researched it and just wondered if I was on the right tracks, if one of you knowledgeable folk could steer me. 1) check fuses, in particular the engine management one. In the fuse box near the battery. 2) check for corrosion around the ECU, bolts into it etc. Take it off if necessary to check behind. 3) look at regulators. (Any idea where these are? At the front of the bike?). On the right track? I don't want to start messing with the dash. That has been fine, but if there's an easy tutorial I'll do that last. Anything else worth noting?
Re 2. Corrosion on the heat sink can cause the Canbus error. Split the heat sink from the ECU and clean the surfaces with emery cloth (or similar). You will need some Torx bits. Also, clean the small earth fly lead that goes under one of the ECU bolts and don’t forget to put it back when you reinstall the ECU.
I've been looking at the online service manuals for the removal. Thanks for the torx bit tip. Hopefully it's just the fuse. In your experience, is it a fairly straight forward job? Or just fiddly.
Just fiddly. The ECU connectors work on a cam. There is a dimple button that you push down and then the cam bar rotates. Don’t try to force the connectors as the cam does all the work. The connectors are handed so you cannot connect the ECU the wrong way.
OK thank you. If that doesn't work I'll post back tomorrow for more ideas! Seems hopeful though based on research.
He looks like he knows his stuff. My problem is not having much grounding in the workings of it All. I'll have ago at the ecu, fuse etc and go from there. I know it a process of elimination, but I lack the knowledge or reference material, expecially knowing what loom cam 38 refers to. Thank you for your help. I'll post back once I've had a play.
Take pictures as you go along or record it then when you get stuck post here and the guys will be able to help you
Ah, bikes not with me today. Does anyone know if the fuses are mini or standard? Just popped put to get some and didn't think.
Sorry mate. Bit confused. Page 117 of the manual fuse guide has no 3 amp fuse in it. Says it is a 5a. Sound right? I bought mini. Plonker. Will pop back to the shop tomorrow!
Yes that's correct. There's 2 fuse boxes, the main one plus another that is highlighted in the photos I added above. I'll check both out. The second one is close to the battery looking at the diagram.
Go through all the cheap checks first. Through my ECU hobby the main causes of the CanBus error I have found to be bad battery and corrosion on the ECU heat sink. Checking the two CanBus wires for continuity is also easy. Go here https://www.ducati.com/ww/en/service-maintenance/owner-manuals and download the handbook. The wiring diagram for the bike is at the end and you can work out what wires to check from the ECU to the Dash. A multimeter in Diode mode will do the continuity check.
