Car Buying - Warranty Advice Please

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Not Carl Fogarty, Jun 3, 2016.

  1. I know someone on here is a car trader (sorry forgot your forum name) but I can't find the post I recall to locate that person.

Looking to buy some cars... what's the rules regarding warranty these days? 3 month mandatory.
By law does a trade seller have to cover 3 months, parts and labour in event of any serious failure, engine or gearbox. Using this "wear and tare" non-sense could argue in any case.

Would really appreciate some advice, regarding buyers warranty because it seems some / most are a waste of time.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some sellers are using this AA Gold 12 months (does this remove the Trade sellers obligation to fix the motor and make it the third partie so to speak?)

Briefly reading up about it... The car owner would have to call AA first with a price. It's obviously like some kind of repair insurance. They seem to send car buyers to Halfords. They won't cover lot's of things and argue about most claims i.e. If a garage says a job takes longer. AA won't support genuine parts, they won't pay decent labour rates... Who want's a motor looked after like this? If I spend 10K+ I want to have it fixed with genuine parts and by specialists.

With so many new motors using oil, BMW, AUDI. Cam Chains failing in a large number of cars... It makes me wonder if new cars are only built to be reliable for the the manufactures warranty period, after that your into high risk, big repairs...

I always buy near new, and try to run them 3 to 5 years but this time I'm buying a little older due to work commitments at the moments and need some motors to get me through until finances permit.. It's a mine field. Buying the previous ex demo models from the main dealer was so much less hassle.

    For the Mrs: an Audi A3 1.4, 1.6 or 1.8TSi 2008ish 60K miles FSH
    (avoiding the 2.0lt petrol)

I'm looking at a Merc 280,320 ML 2006 ish 70K miles FSH (concerns about G7 gearbox) or
    A Berlingo Multi Space 1.6 or 2.0 HDI 2006 - 2008 44'000 to 60K FSH and a A4,A5,A6 Audi Quattro 3.0ltr 2008 ish 60 > 70K miles. (DPF should be ok for my use)

Perhaps an X5 3.0d although I really don't like them too much, not a BMW fan.

I'd maybe consider a Range Rover Vogue 3.0TD but they are as big as my last motor
(which was a pain to park and not my choice vehicle to drive unless required) The Range Rover will be more expensive to run the miles I cover. I need a motor than could tick lots of different boxes.

  2. 749ducaticonvert is your man.

    Very entertaining posts too.

Look at a Mercedes estate. Massive space, comfy car.
Ducaticonvert may well disagree with that tho.

Try Mercedes Benz used retail. Not dealerships. They sell cars registered to their fleet(apparently) only done approx 6000 to 8000 miles maybe 6 months old £10 grand off new price!

Looks like a good way to buy a car to me.
