The exhausts on my 750 SS are knackered. One is quite badly damaged, and the other has been butchered by the previous owner for some reason (I suspect they were just put back on to sell it). The headers/downpipes are fine (or will be when I get them cleaned up and polished). So, what to put on instead? Ideally, I'd like higher-level carbon cans, as the standard ones sit quite low in my opinion, though not tucked right up by the seat unit. I'd much rather have something road legal - or at least that can be made road legal - as I can do without the potential grief from poliss and the neighbours. I don't have Termignoni, SilMoto or full system money for this. I know someone does high-level link pipes (is it BBB fabrications - I think the bloke's a member on here?) and I could in theory just find a pair of 50mm slip-ons, but anybody recommend any alternative solutions? Cheers in advance Mick..
Yep Steve does the link pipes and you could make up your own cans using components from PJ Engineering.... PJ Engineering - Home Page - Manufacturers & suppliers of High Temp. Carbon Fibre, Stainless & Titanium Tubesand Performance Motorcycle Exhaust parts in Lincolnshire, UK I reckon a pair of carbon cans with stainless caps, perforated inner tube and packing would cost about £210 to knock up...
Got my cans off the bay, £75 with the link pipes. They were in good condition too, only done 1000 miles.
yeah, to be honest I can't see myself making my own cans up. In another life, it might be an interesting experiment but the risk of arsing it up is reasonably substantial. "Got my cans off the bay, £75 with the link pipes. They were in good condition too, only done 1000 miles" What cans did you get Lumbux? Are they high-level ones or standard position? Meantime, I've fired off a few emails to see what some of the manufacturers can do for me. Mick..
They are simple enough to make............it makes me wonder how the manufacturers can charge so much for them. You basically stuff a perforated pipe into the inlet cap, then wrap a load of sneezy stuff around it, slide on the sleeve, rivet one end of the sleeve to the inlet cap, then push the outlet cap onto the perforated pipe and inside the sleeve; then rivet that end..... The only piece you may have to cut is the length of the perforated pipe to ensure you have enough room to get the link pipes into the inlet cap.........not really necessary to weld anything, because the perforated pipe is a tight fit, although I would stick a rivet in the inlet cap to stop the pipe from moving. You can ask for the sleeves to be cut to the length you want as well......save you messing them up....... Done...... This is effectively the result, as I changed the ally sleeves on mine for carbon........I could have changed the inlet caps and perforated pipe if I didn't have welded link pipes.........(and they should have been a bit shorter so they were louder)
I'm loving the construct your own cans idea, lots of nice stuff on the pj site. Has anyone tried changing the centre crossover in the manifold for something more gas flow friendly.?
Yes, poor old 470four did it.....search his posts............(NB! He is no longer with us, RIP Darren)
I have high level Sil Motors, they are the dogs, sound better than both arrow and Termi, in my opinion. Did a listening test before purchase on a ride out recently when all three brands were on superlights. They are expensive, but worth it.
+1 for the make your own idea we did that on my old 750ss, and are going to on the 600/750 come the winter!
if you don't want to build your own pj engineering site that posted up also have ready made silencers not sure but I think they will make to order as well
yeah johnboy, they do ready made ones (to your spec, it seems) which might well be an option. OK, it works out more cash than buying the components but it's still way cheaper than silmotor or something (I'm sure they are good but I really can't stretch to that sort of cash) and I'd pay a few quid to a) avoid the risk of gnashing it up and b) avoid having to find the time to do yet another job on the rebuild. Mick.
other option get yourself to a good auto jumble like Newark there was lots good rear silencers for bikes when I went a few weeks ago new stuff as well as used
Holy thread resurrection, Batman! Anyway, it's Christmas so I'm bored (i.e shopping!). Put my mind at rest here - any set of cans providing they have the right inlet bore will do the job, right? For some reason I'm doubting myself on that. No idea why!! I've not even been at the Christmas booze yet... Mick..
I got Conti high-levels and they sound incredible, but nothing else to compare with apart from the standard ones. I'd like to hear the Sil ones.
