As per the title, anybody had on apart? mine seems to be faulty. I can't help but think something is missing out of it. upon opening it up, there are two wires going to a plate, which is held in position by the black plastic body. Then there's a gold spring which sits between a contact on the orange the button and said plate. That is all there is inside mine, and although the kill switch is doing its job, the start switch isn't. any ideas?
Got a pic Ben.......I'm not a lot of use unless I can see it.... (Actually I'm not a lot of use at all.......just a bluff) AL
There are more than 2 wires in there, in fact there are 4. They 'split' around the handlebar so 2 go to the starter and 2 to the kill switch, if there were only 2 you couldn't have both kill and starter switches...
My dad tested it for continutiy, there is no break in the wires. I know there are 4 wires, but 2 go straiight to the switch itself, 2 others to the kill switch. but as the kill switch does its job ( I can start the bike with pliers over the solenoid) something tells me there might be something missing?
Test that the starter switch circuit 'closes' (circuit makes between the 2 wires) but also check the small connector in the back of the solenoid as they tend to come loose. Could also be a dodgy solenoid?
I replaced the solenoid already, thinking it was that... was gutted to discover it is the damn switch! the little plug is in there tight, and i cleaned all connections before trying it... I am not entirely convinced the switch is all there, so will take pics tonight. I have a suspicion there may be a small plate missing?
That's exactly what I'm thinking and why I mentioned a pic..... But..........if that's the possible case, why not just try a loose bridge across the two wires to see if it spins the starter.......IE a paper clip in a pair of nodle-knees pliers....touch down; take off. AL
If there is something missing then it sounds as if it's already been taken apart, which would make me think the previous owner had a problem with it. Probably easier to swap it over for a new/secondhand one.
Are you sure its the starter switch? The reason i ask is mine is temperamental at starting. If all is well you can hear the pump spin up and it will start on the button. If i hear no pump i have to fiddle with the round thing in the center of the pic below (taken from the R/H/S of the bike) Cant remember what this do-dad is but with a fiddle mine starts Like a factory fitted imobaliser NOT
A common fault is that the lead to the solenoid vibrates out, Arquebus very kindly gave me some excellent advice and that is to smear the plug with a little silicon and then plug it back in, it's just enough to hold it in tight.
Update! when I arrived home , my lovely dad had sorted it! turns out the contact on the switch had come loose and when pushed, the spring moved it out the way, so no contact was made! such a simple thing! now I look a muppet for asking lol my little wire to the solenoid is a good firm fit and I have never had one vibrate out , so I guess i'm lucky on that front! Thanks all for your help and advice!
