1198 Chain Adjustment...

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by AndrewS, Oct 8, 2018.

  1. Probably a stupid question, but anyway...

I need to adjust the chain on my 1198S (the Owners Handbook says take it to a dealer - that's not going to happen!). Apparently there should be 33-35 mm slack, measured between the centre of the chain and the metal of the swing arm - correct? On my bike, there appears to be a plastic bit attached to the bottom of the swing arm, so I can't make the measurement - I guess it has to be removed?

    TIA

  2. I just loosen the two bolts and tighten the chain with a enough force to move the wheel a bit. From my own experience by the time you tighten the bolts back up and take it up the road and back the tension is just right. Not sure if it’s because you can do it without using a paddock stand, but I’ve never overtightened it like you can on a normal two sided swing arm.
