998 Chain Guard Vs Hugger...

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by hp82, Mar 23, 2021.

  1. My old carbon hugger is on its way out, weave is discoloured and the front mounting hole has been repaired too many times would need a proper job doing.

so have decided to either get a new one from speed carbon or just go with a carbon chain guard.

just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I do like the clean look of no hugger.

more a conversation starter than anything to hear opinions.
    Cheers

  2. I'm thinking of replacing the rear hugger on my Multi with just a chain guard. I like the look of just the big fat tyre, but not sure how much shite would then be thrown up.

  3. Yeah that’s my concern too. But agree looks good.

  4. I had a hugger on my 996 but in my opinion it spoilt the look of the bike so I replaced it with just a carbon chain guard, looks so much better.

  5. I have a couple with huggers and a couple without. The difference in stone chips, corrosion and general wear on the rear shock, linkages and rear of the crankcases is worlds apart. I’m all for originality but for preservation I’m going to stick with the huggers bar one that won’t see many miles.

  6. I had to have the central rod of my Ohlins shock replaced as it was leaking fluid past the seal due to a chip in it from (presumably) a stone, this is unlikely to have happened with a hugger fitted (although you can get a shock guard).

IIRC the cost of replacement was significantly more than the price of a hugger, not to mention the downtime of removal, sending to a specialist for repair and refitting...
