Chain Length

  1. 1000ss, changing from a 38 tooth to 42 rear with a 15 front.
I want the shortest length practical to reduce the wheelbase.

I believe the original is 96 links....anyone know how many I'll need for 15/42?

  2. gdbd, try this site http://www.gearingcommander.com/ it indicates a 98 link chain for stock set up using 15F 38R sprockets but the bigger rear would require you to move the wheel forwards by as much as 0.67 inches or 17mm. Lose around 15mph in top but if it is like my 748 it benefits in being better mannered in town or traffic and does not affect the ride on normal roads adversely. Put the model details in, adjust the sprocket data and go through all the data it generates, chain info is way down the page

  3. Thanks Denzil....I've been using 14/38 for years, so just a further tweak to the gearing.
