  1. I don’t wish to appear rude but you might be over thinking this. Depending on the bike, your riding style and your attention to maintenance, when you are beginning to run out of adjustment, it’s time to change. 12,000 to 15,000 miles is about average, some riders make a chain last longer, some like me don’t :D Andy

  2. Forgot to say, also depends on the material of the rear sprocket, steel or aluminium. Aluminium will wear out before the chain. Andy

  3. Hi Andy, no offence taken. Thank you for the advice. Ben

  4. If you get the data from the chain manufacture, it’s simple to measure the distance between a set number of pins in the side links and compare that to the max allowed in the spec. Vernier caliper best to measure with.

  5. You can purchase such a device, Ducati have a specific tool very similar to that, if not the same. However, you can also measure as suggested above.
On a 5XX chain the maximum length over 20 pins, centre of pin to centre of pin, should not exceed 321mm.

I use 20 pins because it’s about the most you can measure on most bikes and I think using just 5 or 10 pins, for eg, doesn’t give as good a picture.

Another very rough measurement is whether or not you can move the chain off the rear sprocket at the 3 O’Clock position. If you can it’s time to change.
