Cleaning Brake Calipers

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by folbjo, Jun 1, 2025 at 11:08 AM.

  1. When cleaning brake calipers, can you use brake cleaner?
Mild soapy water and a toothbrush are mentioned, hence my question.
Will brake cleaner negatively affect seals?

  2. always used mild soapy water and a tooth brush as friends have have had trouble with brake cleaner and pistons seizing due to seals expanding

  3. Ok, thanks for the answer. That's what I was afraid of.
Then it will be a toothbrush and mild soap

  4. For a quick wipe over, I use chain cleaner sprayed on a rag. For the more troublesome grime, I use Bilt Hamber, https://bilthamber.com/product/auto-wheel/, it’s Ph neutral, non toxic and cleaned away using water. Andy

  5. I have used brake cleaner to clean calipers on bikes and cars for decades and never had any problems.

  6. Another one for Bilt Hamber like Andy said. Did all this lot with it and came back up like brand new.

  7. I found a dealer of Bilt-Hamber products here in Norway.
I will be placing an order with them as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for the information and quick response.

  8. While you’re ordering, get a 5ltr bottle of SurfexHD too, it’s brilliant stuff. Dilute 20:1, spray, leave, agitate & rinse. Can be used all over the bike but works well on lifting brake dust & grime.

  10. the original gold coating on Brembo calipers is first class and will tolerate many chemicals. Of course brake cleaner will work but if the the "Brembo" etc is highlighted in red then best avoid this area. I prefer WD40 or GT80 etc for this reason, the propellant works just as well.

  11. I'm always impressed how tough that original coating is.

I like using the modern fancy wheel cleaners available, they are great at degreasing and cutting through brake dust.
