748 Clicking Front End

  1. guys my front end clicks around when braking. Had my head races adjusted and it still does it. Today it was pretty loud.

Anyone know what it could be? Standard Showa forks, no receipt of them having had any work done.

I'd say the noise sounds like a crack sound when the front end is under load, obvious when the front brake is applied and the forks dive.

  2. Rjkc, most Showa forks have a habit of "clunking" which is internal to the forks and is nothing too serious except when it gets really bad after 10s of thousands of miles, it sometimes shows up in slow speed manoeuvring. If you listen or feel the fork tubes by the bottom yoke, if someone is pushing up and down on the bars you will be able to hear a quiet clunk. It is normal and is due to clearances in the internal bushes/wear. Other possible causes are moving discs on the bobbins, the hydraulic line to the brakes knocking on the mudguard or rocking pads within the callipers.

  3. My showas did this.

  4. Mine did too - had them apart a couple of times and could never find a problem - seems to be fairly common.

  5. Right guys update on this.

Had headset besarings replaced with tapered type.

Had fork oil replaced with 7.5w.

    No difference. Still clonks away.

Now I know this is common, but they can't have done this from new so what is the cause, does anyone know?

  6. both my bikes do it and its the pads loose in the calipers, if it stops clunking id worry as it means they seized up..
