Hi guys, gals I've had to replace a opening rocker and valve seal on the exhaust horizontal cyclinder on my 916,the head is still on the bike. When removing the Closing rocker I needed to use a fair bit of pressure to remove the spring tang from the step on the side of casing. Now trying to install the spring I am having a nightmare trying to put it back in behind.I have read and watch a few utube methods but most have head off bike.I didn't take intake cam out as all clearances were in spec and rockers looked good.I am now thinking the best way would be to take intake cam out and leaver spring into place from that side.I have notched a groove in my screw driver blade but it still slips off,I would not be impressed if I did any damage. The knack of doing this will save a lot of swearing in the future.Cheers.
sos man,,,,, cant help,, but hats off to you for going there.. ( remember from the distant past many hours of cams / cranks, bearings , shafts, pulleys , plates ,etc etc,,,, fook man,, i hate all that now,,,, just want to drive,, dont mind a bit of jet wash and polish ,,,tbh,, i do still enjoy all that, just not when it is mine and needs done !!!
Been there, it's a nightmare. A friend inadvertently pulled the closers spindles on his ST4s and had me help them put it back together again. After much trial and error and a lot of very bad language I came up with the best tool for the job. I got a screwdriver with a shaft about 12'' long and cut a notch in the centre of the blade which needs to be about 10mm wide (excuse the mixed metric and imperial measurements). I then bent the shaft by about 30º-45º approx. 50mm from the tip. This allowed the end of the screwdriver to manipulate the tang of the spring up onto the ledge behind the rocker where you can't see it. The first spring took over an hour but after I'd made the tool the second one was on in about a minute.
Yea well I've torn my knee and waiting for a op so off work,so I'm bored as.I have had the bike for just under a year and not a lot of history came with it.I have it supported so I can work on it with a dodgy knee doing belts as well.
Great thanks for that Derek, will give that a go,I would be very happy with a hour at this point.Im off to get a 12" screwdriver.
i believe you can buy those tools as i have seen them but never knew what they were for ,,, ( tho maybe also home made !! )
You can buy tools for fitting the spring and rocker to the 2V engine but I've never seen anything for the 4Vs
