Hi all, My bike is just over 2 years old (2015 model) 1200s and for the last couple months I've had intermittent clutch issues - grinding noises on first start up and going into gear, while letting out the clutch Then yesterday the clutch just started slipping so haven't ridden it since. It's my daily driver so gets a fair amount of usage. I think it's the clutch slave cylinder that's at fault, is this a known issue with these bikes? Cheers
I have not had the issue myself, but the slave is a known issue on this forum, and most folk replace with the Oberon unit I believe
I put a CNC racing 28mm slave on mine and it makes the operation much smoother, the OE unit was lumpy but the clutch has never slipped in the last 25K miles
You may be able to get away with just bleeding it. The old models used to be worse but they made a change to the newer slave cylinders to stop the push rod rotating. A replacement would probably make the clutch lighter, just be careful on which diameter you fit (Do a search for other posts)
It's still under dealer warranty so I intend to get them to replace it. Just wanted to know whether anyone else had similar clutch issues Also suffer from frequent false neutrals
Well if it’s slipping once your riding it in a gear then i doubt if it’s the slave. My slave went at 3k.
Yes try bleeding it at the top first, I do mine every couple of thousand miles as it gets air in the mc, not as bad as my previous mts 1200 but it’s a bit of a routine now
The slave cylinder is part of the mechanism to lift the pressure plate and free the clutch. It can often be associated with clutch drag, due to air in the hydraulic system but is very unlikely to cause clutch slip imho. Try checking your clutch lever for free play before it starts to actuate the master cylinder, if there is no free play, then the clutch springs are not fully pressing the plates together. Imho, the friction surfaces are unlikely to be so worn they will slip with free play at the lever. Usually, the tabs and basket wear to the point of unacceptable chatter long before the friction surfaces wear out. It may be that the clutch is so full of dust that it needs a good clean out but my money is on there being no free play at the lever
Thanks, I'll check for free play this evening. Otherwise it'll be down to the dealer to do the fault finding and start throwing parts at it
