Not entirely new. Quite a few employers have been charging staff to park on the premises for years, this includes NHS hospitals. Nottingham daily car park charges have also been reduced this year. I used to pay £15 at the Broadmarsh Centre car park if I left my car there & took the train to London for a meeting. Now I pay £3.90 for the whole day: Nottingham businesses hope to benefit from cheap car parking in city | This is Nottingham Nottingham also has a very reasonably priced tram system with park & ride facilities. There are stops all over town, right up to the train station. The media does like to ignore facts.
Just saying the concept isn't new, but the media only reports partial facts. My employers pay for parking spaces outside the office but choose not to pass costs on to staff. The MD reckons the reduction in corporate business tax benefits the business directly & not the employees so he's happy with this arrangement & so are the staff. One size doesn't fit all, & there are other companies where staff are charged to park at the office.
I am sure it's another form of taxation, but TBH, driving to work is going to be unaffordable for most. I cycle 30 miles a day three or four days a week and work from home the rest of the time. Saves a fortune.
The last government was looking at taxing the use of free parking spaces, once someone thinks if a way of getting it through I don't see how they can stop it. The problem is policing it, sometimes I walk, sometimes I cycle, sometimes I take the car, sometimes I take the motorbike all depending on what else I am doing with my day. Until they can police people like me they cannot tax it (I hope!)
Policing it will be simple - cctv and numberplate recognition. Plenty of supermarkets across the country already use this equipment to stop drivers using their car parks as a free long stay car park. And Verrus (the people responsible for pay-by-phone parking) will have already set plans in place - mostly cos most UK politicians have a financial interest in the company...
Thanks for that Figaro, the companies still have to agree to having the cameras on private land though.
They are in the process of putting anpr cameras on all the entrances where I work, its meant to prevent theft but I suppose it could also be used in the future to deduct a "parking fee" everytime your vehicle enters the site. This is from last year, Security at the time seemed more concerned about checking car boots and enforcing hi-viz for all two wheeled users that they missed this Almost £500,000 worth of metal stolen from Tata Steel works
I work in the city (Sydney) and it's 5.5 k's in to work every day - I cycle it. I can be at work in the same time it takes me to walk to the station. Plus I can do longer rides, well worth it. Cycling in Sydney is not as good as cycling in London either! You guys have it easy! People here object, often violently, to bicycles being on the road...
ha! Had a drunk city type chase me across Albert Bridge not too long ago because I tapped on the side of his(?) car when it got too close. He ranted at me for ages, then went off in traffic. When I caught up, he was hanging out of the window ready to start again, so I got in first with a well timed 'chav'. He leapt out of the car and ran up the middle of road over the bridge trying to catch me. Me riding at almost exactly running pace, looking backwards and giggling. Which, in hindsight, probably didn't help
Significant numbers of people park on our carpark to walk dogs on nearby field, and to go on to work (free park n ride), or to local shops! We wanted to clamp a few, but were advised against it - too much flak and hassle resulting. We tackle 'em and try to appeal to better nature - doesn't work too well. I'd like to have 'em recorded and charged. But wouldn't want same for my staff!! Ruffs
Nottingham council have rocks in their heads they have just put in place a financial incentive for business's to relocate elsewhere where they will not incur these charges ultimately bussiness leases will need to be lowered to compenstate and long term there will be less investment in Nottingham Derby and Leicester must think christmas has arrived early
Meh, I pay almost £100 a month to park my bike in the office carpark. I wouldn't expect to be able to park for free.
The councils are only talking about a pound a day, Paivi. You and your colleagues need to go and have a chat with your boss.
