Converting From 330 To 320mm Front Discs ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Android853sp, Jan 6, 2016.

  1. Where the OE front disc diameter is 330mm (2008 1098), is it that the Brembo caliper has a loose spacer fitted between it and the fork mounting ? If I wanted to use a 320mm disc, is it as simple as removing that spacer (and fitting a longer brake line) ? Thank you, Andy

  2. Do you even need a longer brake line?

  3. Yep, just take the spacer out. Can't see you needing any different lines. You're only moving the calipers 5mm.

  4. Looking at using 1098 Showa forks as a starting point to build a new front end for the 853 to replace the current 748R Ohlins that need to go back on the road bike. Aim to keep the 916/748 Marchesini road and track mag alloy so will also need to look at HPK 10mm offset 6 hole discs (sps?) and probably M4 or M5 (?) calipers. All speculative at the moment. Andy

  5. Caliper bolts may also need attention???

  6. Yes, good spot. Andy

  7. I have a few spare sets you can FOC, if you make the change.

  8. I am not worthy :upyeah:. Andy

  9. You'll need 15mm offset discs which are very difficult to find why not use your existing discs with spacers. Will the Showas fit your mag yokes, are the later ones 53/56 as all the earlier ones were 53/53

  10. I do not think that the later (2008) radial Showas have a 15mm offset like the (2001) 748R Ohlins but I will be able to confirm that. If it does I'm fine with the current 748RS discs fitted. I believe that it has already been established that the offset is to fit the fork bottom so the existing wheel should be okay. The later Showas are 53 mm/53 but that is fine with my triple clamp kit because it came with machined sleeves just for this purpose. Andy

  11. I think the newer (848,1098 etc.) radial 5 bolt discs are 15mm offset standard so if you've already got the deeper ones you should be fine :upyeah:

  12. I've got 1098 Ohlins forks on my 916, the only difference with the Showas is that the Ohlins are 56mm at the bottom yoke where the Showa are 53mm.

For either forks you need 15mm offset discs which are trickier to find for the old 6-bolt wheel (standard on the later 5-bolt). I have Brembo HPK discs for 6-bolt but they don't make them any more but 748R (some) & 998R discs are OK and Brembo make a 'serie oro' disc to suit.

For 320mm discs simply fit without the 5mm spacers, this is how the 848 was.

If using the old wheels you will need a speedo replacement spacer (30mm) to fill the 'void' unless you're using the mechanical speedo drive whch should fit but there is no locating lug on the forks so you will have to ensure it's lined up properly before tightening.

I would advise not to use 5mm spacers behind 10mm offset discs as this means the discs don't seat onto the wheel correctly, it also messes up the speedo drive fitment (if using).

Mudguards mounting points are compatible with older 916-998 type but 1098 type have better fork protection and possibly better aerodynamics?

  13. That is great information, thank you very much. Andy

  14. @Dukedesmo, what calipers are you using ? Andy

  15. Brembo HPK.

  16. Looked on their web page and there is a selection. Are yours M4s ?

  17. No the M4 is the 'Monobloc' as used on the 1098/1198, the HPK is a 2-piece caliper - seen as an upgrade to the M4.

I have the M4s on the Monster and as near a comparison I can make, considering the Monster is a lighter bike is that; both calipers have as much power as you could want with just 2-finger braking but the M4 has a fiercer initial bite whilst the HPK is more progressive. Ultimately it is claimed that the HPK copes better with track/race use which is why it is an 'upgrade' but I would not be disappointed with either.

For the record the HPK are around double the price of the M4.
