Hi Is there a wizzo on here who knows about converting lighting to LED please.. Been looking on YouTube but they are all talking 12v .. I like a challenge but must admit not much knowledge on bike electrics.. Mines a Ducati Hypermotard 796 2010 model.. Many thanks..
Front or rear lights? Rears and indicators are easy as there are so many 'off the shelf' lights out there. The front, not so easy, the dipped beam has to have a proper pattern so you don't dazzle oncoming traffic and it is checked on the MOT, high/main beam is not so critical but it is still better to have it putting the light where you need it. Looking at pictures of the 2010 Hypermotard it looks like a single H4 bulb for the headlight, there are H4 led replacements out there but they may have a poor beam pattern... These look cheap enough to try and should be bright.
What are you considering, full conversion or just indicators ? I'm very happy with the 1299 LED indicators I have recently upgraded to but the first generation Diavel LED headlight is IMO not very good at all. I have LED lights on my Leon FR but I much prefered the bi-xenon gas discharge headlights that my old C class Merc estate had. You might find that the Ducati OE LED indicators might just be plug and play in your existing loom. Andy
All bikes these days are 12 volt. LEDs are fantastic to be seen the be seen with as they are very conspicuous. Do not bother trying to convert normal headlights with LED bulbs as they are rubbish for seeing with, unless you have a factory fitted system where the whole light unit is designed as an LED headlight.
http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/led-high-beams.38996/ My thread on using LED's in the main beam of my 2013 multi, there is a comment about the dip beam pattern being crap on the H4 version fitted to a scrambler at the bottom but a HID would suffer exactly the same problem.
Hi Huys Sorry for the late reply but we had a bit of a emergency in the family .. As its a custom build project I'm happy to design my own incospicuos tail light and indicators., it's the wiring to/from the loom that was worrying me.. If it's 12v then that's good.. But I've read where with led indicators you will get an incorrect flash pattern.? Eh too fast...Was not planning on touching the headlight, just the front indicators.. Great hearing your views on it.. Brilliant ..
The indicators are easily sorted with a led flasher relay to replace the standard flasher relay. The led's use much less power so the standard relay flashes fast as a warning that a bulb has blown. On mine however, the indicators work normally with the factory LED fronts and 899 led rears added. Try it first and if they flash like crazy then you need the led flasher relay. It's all 12v on bikes, although the charging system can get up to 14.5 ish.
If you go with stock Ducati LED indicators from whatever model, no. Not too sure about some of the really tiny after market ones though. All the MoT looks at is if it's got them fitted then they have to work. Andy
