Coolant Drain Plug Stripped!!

  1. I tried nipping up the drain plug and have stripped the thread:rage:
I feel like there may be extra good thread behind the front 7mm that has stripped. Which means I may be ok using a drain plug/screw with a longer M10 x 1mm pitch thread. The standard drain plug has 8mm below the head with a 1mm thick washer.
Has anyone had to overcome this problem before? Found a good solution?

I would rather not go down the helicoil/screwed insert road if I don't have to, as it is only a drain plug.

  2. What bike are you talking about?

  3. It's a 2004 999 but I suspect most use the same plug.

  4. Sorry, I'm not familiar with it. All the Ducatis I have dealt with have had an M6 screw at the bottom of the water pump cover for draining the coolant.

  5. Have you got a spare banjo bolt you can try (most brembo MC's are 10x1) just to see if the deeper threads are good

  6. I think this is the same for a 999. At least that's how i drained mine.

  7. Can you put a picture up?

You sure it was the coolant drain?

  8. That's why I'm baffled by the M10 drain plug. This is from the manual...

  9. Yep, #2.

  10. The plug head only uses a small Allen key but I'm pretty sure they're bigger than M6 thread :Bookworm:

  11. Yes it is definitely M10 x 1mm pitch. The head diameter is small than an M10 Cap head screw. Hexagon socket is the same size as the M6 engine screws.
Banjo bolt is a good tip. I have borrowed a gauge so hope to get a better idea on the thread condition tonight.

  12. Just buy a new water pump cover.

  13. Even better, I could just go and buy a new Ducati. Problem solved. Thanks very much.

  14. Deeper threads are perfect and there are 5.5mm of them which is plenty for this application. Just need to get the optimum M10 x 1 screw now.
I have the cover off now. Why is there a coating on the inside? Is it a friction free coating?

  15. Did you try a banjo bolt?If so, could this be cut down?

  16. Sorry, just spotted your reply. I didn't have a banjo bolt to try but I would think it would work. However because of the poor quality of the thread in the cover, I had a screw made to give a tightish fit.

  17. As long as youre sorted.

  18. Yes, thanks:handok::yum:

  19. thread closed then :)
