cooling problem or not

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by duc daz, Mar 18, 2012.

  1. ive swapped my 1098 for a 1198s and i have to say was a fantastic move, with all the extra goodies it makes it into an amazing bike but ive noticed that the bike runs very warm, for example when i used to start the 1098 up,it wouls take about 4to5 mins to get up to riding tempreture but with the 1198 its about a minute, when im ridinding the 1198 and tempreture is at 70 and i stop for traffic, in no time its at 90+ and when i get running again it takes an age for the tempreture to come down..also when i get of the bike its got that very hot pungent smell to it.is this normal as the bike is a bigger cc and its got the same radiator etc as the 848 1098 or is it me being to anal:rolleyes:

  2. Hi M8,

I'd hook it up to ducatidiag on a pc and check the fans run if I were you, just to be sure.

  3. If its any thing like the 999 fans the left one comes on at 103 and the right one at 104 So I dont think its getting hot at all . Is the smell not just the newness burning off .

  4. It may sound stupid, but have you checked that there isn't anything blocking the flow of air through the radiator fins......dead bird/fox/badger or road mud and grime?

Have you checked the coolant levels? is it using any coolant or does the level hold steady? if it's smelling bad that might be a leaking rad.

do the fans kick-in? i can't remember what temp they are set to, but they should help a little.

Just my thoughts, hope it's of some use mate.

  5. this might be the case..thanks for your input mate

  6. im worried that come the summer the bike is going to realy struggle

  7. Ducdaz,

I wouldn't worry too much, I had my 1198s all last "summer" I use that word advisedly! and yes it gets hot and takes plenty of time to cool down, but the fans always kick in in traffic and stop it from overheating, I can't for the life of me remember what temp they kick in at, I've even checked the manual but I think there are some typo's in there. The bike just hates traffic, but thats no surprise, if you are really concerned I am sure JHP or CJS in bristol, could flash your ECU to get the fans to kick in earlier. As soon as my grey matter remembers that temp the fans kick in I will give you a shout. Or just give John at JHP a shout he'll know off the top of his head.

  8. The writer software, from JP of ducatidiag fame, allows you to alter the cut in temperature of both fans.

But it's not free like Ducatidiag.

  9. Hi Anth, is that the French software?

I was just getting into a conversation with someone on the "old" site and they sent me ebay cable specs but thats when the site went down so I never took it any further.
