Hello all I have a '916' 95 and it has started a new problem. lol. When I go to start it now the fuel pump noise has changed, it sounds weak and laboured. Then sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn't. When it does it's okay at higher revs, but sounds awful at lower revs missing etc Is it the regulator/rectifier? Which a friend said is a common fault. I have another one which has been cut off another bike, which was given to me when I purchased the bike, with the six wires I'm unsure which goes where. If it is the problem in the first case. I thought I would ask, as it might be an easy fix rather than another garage bill. Thanks Rhys
Could be the fuel pump, have you checked it and changed the fuel filter it could be getting blocked. When the ignition is switched on you should hear the pump prime and pressurise the system and then it will stop. Is it sucking in air at all? a low level of fuel can cause very erratic running especially if your fuel level warning light is not working properly or at all. The above might be obvious but they can provide the same type of symptoms under certain conditions.
if you have a multimeter quick check at pump electrical connection, you should see battery voltage. check with connection made, i believe the pump relay is a common issue right through the range.
Sounds like a lack of current available to the fuel pump. It probably sounds better at higher revs as the battery voltage rises which means the regulator is ok and charging the battery. As said above most likely a faulty relay but it's worth checking all the connectors and grounds involved. And while you're at it check the state of the connector from the alternator to the regulator with the 2 yellow wires. It's often burnt or melted.
