I've been offered a bike I've been chasing (748R) but it's in holland. Has anyone any experience of getting a bike shipped over, costs, recommendations? Would also need brought up northern england/ Scottish border too. Cheers.
Yes, I have looked into going in a van down to calais, but that itself is a good 7hr drive for me. Then there's ferry/ chunnel costs, then up to holland. Bit wary of this as never driven in Europe before. Cheers
SOS Motorcycle Recovery specialists in all aspects of Motorcycle Rescue, Recovery. and Transportation Could try these guys.
Hull to Rotterdam ferry a better option? Overnight but it's a decent crossing. If you go the route of fetching it yourself and you have to hire a van, make sure it's ok to take it into the EU.
Thanks, as we are still in the eu, as far a I can tell, it will be no problem fetching it in, getting a nova certificate and registring it here with the dvla. More research needed though, cheers
It's not difficult tbh driving a 'right hand' vehicle in Europe, you just need to take your time and remember to drive on the Right. I was nervous at 1st but just remembered that my 'right shoulder needs to be next to the kerb' until I'm back in Blighty. Not every driver in the EU is a big fcukwit like a lot of the UK drivers. They have a good degree of common sense, but it can be fast flowing at times. However be aware of Nelly's comments above, not all Hire Co's will allow you to drive a hire van in the EU. Also watch speed limits carefully and remember its KMH not MPH, as changes are being made to catch you nowadays.
Id happily go get it for you if you cover expenses. Been planning on a trip to holland recently anyway
I did this about 18 months ago.Based in the North East it was a no brainier for me to go Newcastle to Ijmuiden ferry overnight .Not cheap at £370 for van and cabin but you wake up in Holland about 15 miles from Amsterdam. The roads are good and Holland is a very small country so you won't be too far away from anywhere.I went to Zwolle which is about 70 miles from port.nice easy run with good motorways circumventing Amsterdam.Traffic heavy around there but decent drivers . When you get the bike you will need all of the paperwork from seller in particular the Veld 1 and Veld 2 docs. The DVLA will want these and anything else you have to register here. Nothing to pay at port re VAT that's a separate process but you may need to show Veld docs, mine wasn't checked at all . The VAT bit is explained on the Gov website .Its based upon mileage ,age and cost .You complete some details and they let you know if you owe them anything ! I didn't . All in all it was relatively straightforward In my opinion mains points are Make sure van is legal as per Nelly Get a photo of all available paperwork before you go and compare it to the Application doc for uk registration e.g certificate of conformity ,Veld docs which seem to be vehicles passport out. The return ferry is usually 4.30 ish,I stayed second night in hotel as didn't want stress of trying to get business done and get back to Ijmuiden The Friday and Saturday ferries in both directions are heaving with people on the lash having seen it first hand I would probably go on another day for a trip like this. Good luck with your purchase and I hope bike is a belter.
Ive used this website on four different occasions, you put in the collection and delivery points. Wait for best price from couriers. Of course you must check their feedback/insurance etc. Highly recommended https://www.shiply.com/
there is also the harwich to the hook of Holland. Personally though if it is that much of a "you must have so you are prepared to buy from Holland" then a van hire and a drive would be my 1st choice.
Small update. Had various delivery quotes, with 3 coming in at £400, to my door on the eng/scot border. It would cost me more to go myself. These are with specialist motorcycle couriers, insured ect. I will hopefully finalise the deal on the bike next week, then get the ball rolling. Just the issue of registering it then, which seems straight forward enough. Cheer for all comments.
