Diagnostic Software - Who Uses What ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by oldtech, Jul 8, 2019.

  1. I've just been reading this thread
    https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/service-message-reset-848.71467/
    but I didn't want to derail it , or go off-topic .....

Those apps that are mentioned ..... JPDiag or GuzziDiag ??
are they the correct names ?

Does anyone who is using them know if they run on both 64-bit and 32-bit machines ?
I've got an old 32-bit Toshiba laptop which is gathering dust ( allegedly )
It's a good solid machine , and I fancy it for making a little home diagnostic centre in the garage .
But I don't know diddley about the various software packages that are around
and if they are generally well-liked .

I'm guessing from other comments here that we are talking about paid-for software that Ducati owners are using ?

I came across a Scottish fellow on one of the Ducati forums , and he had written his own software package , and was giving it away to forum members.
But it was a good few years ago , and I can't remember if it was this forum .

The wonderful world of Linux has got some great free apps available ,
but I haven't seen any for engine diagnostics / analysis .

  2. Yes, those are correct names.
    Download for JPdiag - http://jpdiag.akress.com/
Download for Guzzi Diag - http://www.von-der-salierburg.de/download/GuzziDiag/
If your bike uses a Marelli IAW59 or IAW5A you might also find ScanST useful - http://christian.giupponi.free.fr/HELP/SCAN_ST.HTM#Téléchargement

JPdiag and Guzzi Diag definitely will and I'm pretty sure that ScanST will too. There is also a Mac version of Guzzi Diag.

Not me and surprisingly I've never heard of it.

  4. Although it is for MotoGuzzi bikes it will work fine if you select the correct ECU type IAW59M or IAW5AM.

  7. I have used both and they are absolutely great. GuzziDiag allows to read error codes too (diagnostics), and a lot more. Notice that older GuzziDiag versions have more features as I wrote here:
    * https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/1198-2011-ecu-image-for-dtc-upgrade.73009/ (search for "V45" and for "wine")
    * https://www.ducati.ms/threads/service-indicator-reset-with-guzzidiag.576121/#post-7031673 (search for "manual")

Using these programs requires to buy only a USB KKL cable for just about 15EUR (and a 3 pin to 16 pin ODB2 adapter), but you need one with the newer chip called "FT232BL" produced by FTDI, see https://www.ducati.org/threads/848s-dash-display.56075/page-3#post-744952
I think that even very old laptops should do the job, especially if running GNU/Linux. Being proficient with a terminal helps (why kids don't learn this by default at school??!?).

PS: in the wonderful world of free software GNU/Linux, "free" usually means free as in "free speech" not as in "free beer"! https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html
