My 1299 has thrown the red engine light after having been stood for 6 months. I’d like to put my mind at rest and try and establish what may have gone wrong whilst it’s sat doing nothing. It can’t be anything mechanical because it hasn’t been ridden, well I hope not anyway so I’m hoping it’s an oxygen sensor or something like that. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive diagnostic tool/software I could perhaps purchase. Many thanks

I use MelcoDiag. Free to download but you need to acquire a free licence file from JP. And buy the hardware to interface with the software (Windows only, I think)
OBDStar, its plug in and play. Interface is user friendly. OK, it's not cheap but it's effective out of the box. Came with the correct cables for my 1260 Multistrada as well as the older three pin one. It's worth checking for more recent Ducatis, such as Multi V4, as diagnostic port is different. OBDStar might have upped their game and included the new connector since I bought mine. These cables can be had off of eBay or Amazon for £12-15 if needed. edit > just looked at the post above by @chrisw, the new lead is included. There is a UK importer. BM Diag, you might want to buy from them. Not sure if they include the newer lead though, you'd need to check. I got mine from there, though it was a couple of years ago.
That's a great piece of kit but you're right, muchas moolah. I'm swaying towards the EBDStar right now. I have a few bikes so looking at the MS70 which will probably do what I need it to but Rob at BMDiag is checking to see if it covers the Aprilia. Still alot of brass which ever way you look at it. The link you provided in your earlier post for the OBDStar includes the later OBD2 to euro5 connector. You can buy these off of the likes of Amazon or eBay for a few quid if not included with your chosen scanner.
Regarding the OBDSTAR is EBAY the way to go or better buying through BM Diag the UK importer? Fair difference in price or am I missing something? Is this unit still the best for DIY use? It's got to do the most recent Ducatis. As always any advice is greatly appreciated
Check that the eBay ones aren't sent from outside the UK. You'll likely get stung for VAT and import duty. Probably a processing fee from the carrier too. Anything over £135 If I recall. Personally I went with one from BMDiag. Recently dealt with them for a renewal of the firmware subscription, all easy and friendly to deal with. Not sure if you'll get the same service from elsewhere. It was the safe bet. Haven't checked recently for updates, the firmware licence is for a year and you qualify for updates during that period. Newer bikes/models being added all the time, though not immediately as they come out mind you. You can download a spreadsheet of what's in the current firmware from the obdstar website. Go here and click the 'Function Manual' tab, download the ISCAN DUCATI COVERAGE file, it's a ZIP file with some Excel files inside. I can see that it was updated yesterday.
One thing to note about the OBDStar subscription. You don't need to pay for a renewal if your bike(s) are already catered for - only need to pay if you buy a newer bike that came out after the bike/software-compatibility version. I could have worded that better but it's late ...
Whilst this is partially correct keep an eye out and compare the current excel spreadsheet I linked to above once your included annual subscription expires. The lead-time for the addition of new features does take a while to catch up. Sometimes after a bike has been discontinued by the manufacturer (in our case Ducati). I updated mine and bought the later Euro5 lead (now included when buying from BMDiag) so as to be able to help others. Also incase I buy a later model Ducati in the future.
