  1. Oh great! Soon every car will effectively be an unmarked police car :Banghead:

  2. Glad I'm not the only cynic. :Watching:

  3. Also, i bet that it will only be applicable to "insurance appoved" dash cams fitted by "insurance approved fitters" which will cost you the earth. I bought a dash cam off ebay for about £30 which I plan to fit to my car at some point, but some of the prices of the dash cams are in the hundreds of pounds region.

  4. There'll never be a (working) 'black box' on any of my vehicles...

  5. They'll probably have 3G or wifi so all the data can be uploaded to the insurance company. I'll leave it thanks!

  6. Isnt there something about young drivers not driving at night and the insurance company installs a tracker to make sure they don't.

Every vehicle will be fitted with tracker someday which will record speeds etc.

Employers have them in vans already and can tell you everything about your driving habits, including speed!

  7. With the lethal driving I see on a daily basis I welcome mandatory dash cams, people get away with far too much at the moment.

  8. Yep, all new policies for young drivers already have to have a black box installed which records speed and G otherwise they wont get insured. Still frighteningly expensive for though

  9. I'd rather see more traffic police and better driving standards. But hey lets just accept more monitoring as thats cheaper and easier. It amazes me how people are so easily willing to loose their independence and privacy. As it is plainly obvious that soon enough this will become mandatory. This will upset @Carter as he downvoted my previous concern on this matter. Which I deleted as he was clearly upset enough to downvote it rather than merely disagree.

The root cause are driving standards and a total lack of traffic enforcement by real police. Peoples driving standards have fallen drastically over the years as has their patience. Everyone rushes around trying to shave seconds of a journey and generally being rude and obnoxious to one another. This needs to be tackled throughout society as a whole. Additionally cuts and the like have reduced the visible police on the street. Where are they? Where are the police? Why have we reduced our traffic enforcement to the current level? People do stupid things because they know they can get away with it. I want more police with greater powers to enforce the traffic regulations.

Cars come with built in indicators. For crying out loud, use them. Slow down too. Arriving 5m later is not going to ruin your day. You will arrive less stressed and you will have upset fewer people. Chill.

I am a bit Driving Miss Daisy in a car. I am on a bike too in town.

I walk to work as I am lucky to live near my job. What I see each morning is a battle. If everyone just chilled, relaxed and observed the rules and regs of the road, we would not need additional measures like cameras. But it seems we are willing to blindly accept this as the norm. If as pedestrians we carried on like this then something would have to be done. But as its in our cars its somehow okay.

How often do you see children out playing in the streets? We have made our urban areas no go zones for our children. This is all of our own doing because we are a bunch of impatient, rude and frankly moronic motorists; and it seems we do not want to do this simple readjustment of our own behaviour voluntarily and would rather be forced into it via mandatory monitoring.

Only this morning I was nearly knocked over by a lady in her Range Rover as I crossed the road. She was rushing to close a gap in traffic her lack of attention had made as she was more concerned with her make up. She never noticed me taking advantage of a gap in traffic to cross the road. I had to jog out her way. She then very nearly tail ended the car at the end of the queue. This is madness. I am not great at jogging.

I want to see a world where I see more old people walking about, children playing etc and if the camera brings that back then great. I somehow doubt this will happen though. What generally happens is people get more than they bargained for and things never get any better.

A camera is not a panacea for our motoring ills. Its just a plaster on a festering sore. Rant over. :Arghh::mad:

    :)

  10. Since when?

My Son recently started driving and didn't have to have this, he was offered a cheaper insurance option if he took it but wasn't compulsory.

I must have misunderstood. No harm, no foul

  12. I think Russia uses a lot of dash cams because of a pedestrian claims scam.

  13. When I renewed my car insurance a couple of months ago, I went on one of the comparison sites and got various quotes back. One was for a 'black box' insurance claiming to save me money - price was about 3 times what I pay for a normal policy?

I suppose they only 'work' for youngsters (one of the few benefits of being an old fart) but I wouldn't have one even if it was half the price of what I currently pay.

A friend of my Son has a car that his parents bought and pay all the running costs, they got him one of these policies where not only is he monitored but he can't drive after 10:30pm and he gets 'warnings' (and, I think 'fines') if he exceeds any speed limit. He hates it but has no choice as he's a student with no income, so a free car is better than no car...
