999 Do I Need A New Dash

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by postmaster, Apr 26, 2018.

  1. My electrical gremlins seem never ending. I now have no lights.
High beam, dipped and rear light are all gone.
Fuses are all good, relay good and I've checked continuity on all the wires I can think off.
The relay is just not activating and I've read that this is controlled by the dash switching a
ground connection when the ignition is turned on.
    Anyone got any ideas please

  2. After a long winter, fuses and connectors are very likely to have some light corrosion impeding their function.
Some contact cleaner and lots of wiggling could well pay dividends.
    Relays can seize up too.

  3. I have replaced all fuses and relay.
It passed mot a week ago and there is no corrosion I can see.
The only lack of continuity I can find is between dash and relay.

  4. Fuse holders could have a layer of a invisible light corrosion and fuses need to be dead flat to make proper contact with the holder, any twist in the blade will impair contact.
Try contact cleaner on the dash connector and another common source of weird problems on these bikes is the ECU earth not making proper contact.

  5. Any 999 owners near you?
Maybe swap dashes to see the result...

  6. Sorted I think
Two hours of wiggling, cleaning and swapping things and I think I've cracked it.
The big connector behind the dash was sprinkled with green flecks.
Tooth brush and contact cleaner took care of it.
At the same time I disconnected the battery for 2 mins.
So what did it ? I dont know, but all good now.
    Thanks for your input OR
