Do You Need Expensive Chain Lube ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Wassy, Oct 6, 2019.

  1. Interesting stuff

  2. Chain lube isn't wildly expensive imo, compared to the cost and time to replace the chain & sprockets - especially if the effing chain breaks out on a ride.I lube often to avoid the above.

The best lube is the one that doesn't spray off all over the chain guard & back wheel!

  4. In theory it would seem not with modern O and X ring chains, just a regular clean with paraffin (kerosene) and a brush to remove dirt and potentially O ring damaging grit and prevent rust forming.

  10. 5E1ECB10-34AD-4354-B573-66EDE703150A.png Motul Road C2 is the best I’ve found so far, goes on thin so stands a chance of getting into the rollers and it hardly flings, its clear as well so doesn’t make the chain look a mess.

  11. Btw, if you look carefully at the diagram in my previous post you’ll see that the “O” ring seals between the plates so trying to get chain lube into the pin/roller at that point won’t work (although you should still apply it there to lube the outer edge of the seal rings) to lube the pins and rollers apply the lube where the rollers meet the side plates, there’s a gap between the ends of the rollers and side plates, if applied well the lube will flow under the rollers, it’s surprising how many people just apply lube to the gap between the plates where the “O” ring sits.

  13. Wouldn't it be better to use clean engine oil? Or does it not matter because you still have gloss paint on your brush?

goes on like WD40. then goes super sticky.

  17. I saw that video on an earlier post and was so impressed that I've changed to applying gear oil with a tooth brush. The result has been very good and I'm currently on 17k miles with my chain sprocket set and it still has some life left. The chain looks good with no sign of any rust!
