I think I depends on how optimistic a personality you are and whether you are looking only for a personal silver lining. If you look hard enough there's nearly always a silver lining - for someone. For example the invention of the wheel put a lot of farriers out of work ... but it created a lot more employment opportunities further down the line for wheelwrights, motorcycle and car designers, mechanics, bus drivers etc. Even things that look disastrous often turn out to have a silver lining. Of course anyone would struggle to find a silver lining in events such as natural disasters or most wars though!
