Went in to my garage to do a simple task and believe I have dropped a washer down my pipe (ooh matron). I had the end cans off in order to get to a bolt, undid said bolt and heard a clunk then couldn't find it for love nor money. If it is in there do I have to take the pipe apart to get to it, or can I just start the engine and watch it launch out through the roof of my garage? The bike is an 1198. If it's just a little 6 or 8 mm one, I'd tend to leave it. It'll rattle around for a bit and likely work its way out.
I was unsure if there was any danger of it going back up into the engine? Hopefully as all the force is going out then no. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Chances are you wont get enough gas flow to force said washer out if it's slid to the lower section of the exhaust. However! I be retrieving it. The chance of it making it into a cylinder is slim but it is possible!

When I had to turn the outlet end caps on my cans to get them at the right angle, two of the inner side pop rivets fell inside after I drilled them out and was probing around in the packing to remove them Started the bike up and they were flung out at 2500 rpm.
I dropped a washer down my exhaust when i was fitting my 50mm termi`s. Had to remove system to retrieve it. Luckily its easy enough to do on my 996.
@Pavey going for a play with nowhere to go. If you msg me your address in the next 5 mins I can drop it in to you.
Get a good magnet, stick it onto the bottom of the lowest part of the system on the outside, then slide the magnet up the outside of the pipe to the opening. Do it a few times and if the washer is in there it will come up. Would I leave it in there? No. I have seen what a loose article can do to the skin of a Harrier with enough vibration.
May well be out to play Friday evening or Sunday some point wife/weather depending. May be able to drop it in then if you're still struggling.
My grabby tool turned up, not quite sure it goes far enough down to get to where it needs to go. Also the magnet is so damn strong it sticks to the inside of the pipe like s*** to a blanket. To combat this I extend the claw out as this breaks the bond but then having to do it on the way back up could disconnect the washer if it has managed to stick to it. I took a risk and started the bike up and almost blew my ear drums - in the garage with the door shut and the end cans off. No visible projectile which leaves the question is it in there? Will I ever know without taking the next section of pipe off. To do this on an 1198 do I have to take the rear wheel off, not too confident in doing that to be honest?
I can get the full exhaust system off / on my 1098R without removing the wheel. And that's the big 70mm system. Once you undo the bolts, the exhaust does swivel and move a bit.
I can add to that - dropped a washer in the fuel tank and had to drain it and take the pump out to get to it and then proceeded to drop the suspension bolt inside the swing arm on my last hyper....couldn't get that out for love nor money so your not the only one.....as the song goes...
