Dry Or Wet Clutch. Which Do I Have?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by gurth, Mar 23, 2025.

  1. I have a 750SS, which is due for a replacement clutch. It started to slip/go last summer; at 27k miles, it could be the original.

While ordering parts, how do I know I have a wet or dry clutch that is short of cracking open the machine? Is there an obvious sign?

I'm 99.99% sure I need a wet clutch kit unless the oil window below is a separate compartment.

  2. Oh, it's on the internet, so it must be true.

The 750SS (non-ie) has both wet and dry clutch models. I understand they were a parts bin construction, and Ducati used whatever they had at the time, hence the ambiguity...

  3. I may have answered my only question while digging into my Haynes manual, a note on page 2-29 (not under the transmission specification page at the start of the chapter where I expected it).

This procedure applies to all wet clutch models (ie, the 600SS, M600 and M750 models, and the 750SS models from engine VIN 001275)

So, I need to double-check that VIN.

  4. The picture you have posted shows a wet clutch model.

  5. Thank you!

I had a sneaky suspicion that was the case, but I couldn't face the mess of starting the job and leaving it undone while waiting for parts to arrive.
