Ducati 1098 Clutch

  1. I need to replace the clutch on my 2007 1098, Is this a fairly easy job to do and do i need any special tools? Ive been told that the clutch plates are still in very good condition however the basket is well worn!!

  2. You will need a clutch holding tool. Ducati Clutch Tool Works on All Dry Clutch Engines 1985 to Current | eBay

This will hold the basket in place whilst you undo the big nut. This is the only 'special' tool you might need.

When you remove the plates, what I do is i have a zip tie and i put the plates on it in the order they come off. My zip ties are the re-useable ones. So its easy to undo it. FYI I also use one of these around the front brake lever and tighten it. Gives me a bit more security when the bike is on the paddock stand. By having the front brakes on.

BTW you might be able to gently file the edges of the basket to make it last a little longer.

  3. The guy that serviced my bike said the basket was very worn which is the reason its very noisy, could this also be the reason when sometimes trying to pull away it does snatch and make a high pitched noise? Its sounds easy enough to replace though!

Many thanks for your help and advice.

  4. The OEM basket on big Ducatis is almost classed as a perishable item

  5. It is an easy job Gary. If all goes swimmingly it can take about an hour to remove and swap. You will need a torque wrench though to tighten the centre nut. Sorry i cant remember torque setting.

  6. Great, Ill order the tool and get the torque setting from my local dealer.
    Thank you

  7. I am presuming the clutch will be pretty similar to the one on my 996 which I changed a couple of weeks back. It really is a pretty straight forward job. On mine though what started off as just needing to replace the clutch hub after a couple of legs snapped off ended up with me replacing the entire clutch. The only tools I used was allen keys to remove the clutch cover & pressure plate, a special tool to hold the clutch whilst you undo the hub bolt and some sockets to remove the basket. The tool I got is this one:

DUCATI MOTORCYCLE DRY CLUTCH LOCK TOOL LASER CUT IN U.K. IN 10 MM AT 620MM LONG | eBay

It also holds the basket in place whilst you undo the bolts which hold the basket to the engine.

You will also need some loctite 510 to seal the bolts holding the basket to the engine. Make sure you clean the threads thoroughly first.

Whilst the clutch is out, measure the friction pad thickness to make sure they are still okay. On mine 996 the min was something like 2.8mm and mine was well on that, so I replaced them all with new barrett plates. The overall thickness of the clutch pack also needs to be within spec.

All in all nice easy job, well within DIY realms.

The torque settings I used were

Main clutch hub bolt = 250Nm
Bolts holding basket to engine = 35Nm
