My 2007 1098 always drains its battery when left for a period of time! The dash indicates 14.1+ when the engine is running. I leave the bike on charge and sometimes the optimiser cant seem to cope with the drain!!! Is there any way I can check what drain is being but on the battery when the bike is at rest! It only has the standard immobiliser fitted also the battery is newish (purchased within the last couple of months).
I've heard on here that if you have the data logger (DDA) you should not leave it plugged in but its only standard with the S & R There is a battery draw but it shouldn't be so great that an optimizer should struggle, wonder if the Reg Rec is causing a greater than normal drain. Anyway if you have a multimeter you should be able to check it. Disconnect the neg terminal from the battery connect one multimeter lead to the neg battery terminal & the other to battery neg, in other words the meter is between the lead and the battery, set the meter to Amps and you should be able to measure the draw (i.e. the meter will be in series). NEVER CONNECT THE METER IN PARALLEL WHEN USING AMPS, the resistance through the meter is very low in AMPS mode and if you are lucky you'll blow the meter fuse in the best case scenario, the worst is you'll blow the meter to bits (potentially very dangerous). I would reckon draw would be below 50mA. With mine I can comfortably leave it a week between top ups and even then it charges up pretty quickly John
Could it be a poor earth? Check all connections are good and clean. Not sure if the extra earth to engine block trick works on 1098's. might be worth a try.
abmatt, I could be wrong but I don't thing a poor earth would cause excessive drain, probably the opposite (no doubt I now will be proved wrong by some electrical whizz kid). You can install the upgraded leads for earth, solenoid & starter on the 1098, bit of a faff but it does fit (sort of) and improves the starting immensley. I did it with mine, thought the battery was duff as the bike was really struggling to start. Bought a new battery and only got a marginal improvement, put in the leads & BINGO, she turns over great and starts quicker. The old battery is back in and I have the confidence to venture out without fear of getting stranded. John
do the above procedure and then disconnect the dash and see what difference you get as i have heard of the dash causing the drain
Don't think the poor earth could cause drain. More thinking that if the bike is a poor starter the op could be thinking 'drain on the battery' when it could be a poor earth.
Ahh sorry abmatt I misunderstood apologies. On that note if the bike is a poor starter upgrade the battery to solenoid; solenoid to starter and battery to frame cables it makes a really noticeable difference John
