Ducati 1198 Understeer and adjustable yokes

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by bootsam, Oct 9, 2013.

  1. Hi,

Anyone else experience the understeer in slow turns? Drives me nuts on the hairpins in the Alps. Anyhoo, i wondred if anyone on here has experience with adjustable clamps to increase the trail etc. Or to be honest I'd just like some advice from people who understand these things better than I. I have a 1198 and the suspension sag etc has all been set up for me and that is fine but i feel it pushes the front too much for my comfort.

So any tips on adjustable yokes or other mods to mitigate against this?

  2. Are the tyres in really good shape? My suspension set-up on my last bike highlighted that I had a front tyre that had worn really out of shape which would give vague turn in and under steer at slow speed, had no confidence in sub-40 mph corners

  3. I raised the rear ride height on my 1098 for similar reasons. Can remember the height increase, but it was 2 turns on the adjuster.

  4. It happens even on the brand new SC's I took to the alps this summer. I notice it especially as my 916 turns so well. Its the slow corners and hairpins which highlight the problem more. Fast sweepers are fine in general. The 916 tips in and around a slow corner on rails. Maybe I will take that to the alps next year, if it wasnt so damn uncomfortable.

I might have a go with the height adjuster. Havent touched it since I had my suspension professionally set up for me. I'm loathe to mess with it as its great on the road and all i have to do is 1 click more rebound for track. However that said, i'm considering some adjustable yokes so...

Just wondered if anyone here has any experience in this area.

  5. the 1098 and 1198 run a fair amount of offset to the forks as they have a steep steering angle (40mm offset iirc) it helps with stability in the corners but as you say it can make them feel like they are slow to turn in. Its fairly common in the states for people to fit yokes with less offset to improve turn in, they aren't cheap though...

  6. Interesting comments above.....good to know.

Not related but I was having the same issue with the 848 I recently got. The harder i pushed, i was running wide on corners.

Got the sag etc set up and the front also. Back end is inch perfect, the front feels a little like its tucking in but Im getting there with it.

Out of all the mods you can add ( see my other thread ) the suspension is key.

@bootsam: Next tiem you want twisty, hilly, incredible fast sweepers and the most amazing time on a bike, head to Germany. Base yourself in Garmich, blows the pants off Switz imo.

  7. 749sDub. As it happens we were considering Germany for next year. I'll look into your recommendation. Cheers :)

My suspension I feel is pretty much spot on. ie I have no chicken strips and the bike feels stable and tight in normal bends. Its just the hairpins and slow corners, which the alps has a great many off.

D902 from Cluses to Thonin en Bas. Try it sometime. Plus the road over The Jura's into Gex.
