Hello, I just bought a 1996 916 yesterday, there is a problem with the lights, it starts no problem but when i switch the dims or heads on the indicators come on (constant, not blinking) and the console lights go out (neutral lamp) etc. The dim and rear lights flicker slightly and the head light does not come on. Any tips on where to start looking? Many thanks...
Could be a bad connection or a bad earth. If you have a wiring diagram run through all the connections and clean, check or test them as necessary.
Yup, definitely sounds like an earth problem. Check the big connectors too, for corrosion and clean and grease.
As it's an original 916 it has the 350W charging system which was only just capable of running the bike system, let alone having the lights on as well! It may be that, aside from a bad earth, you have a faulty reg/rec. I would get this checked as well. Don't forget that you can't have dipped and main beam on at the same time on this model, and don't mod it because it was never designed to do that and the 350W system cannot cope if you do!
