I managed to buy a new 1 from Stein-Dinse in Germany for 33 Euro and it arrived within 2 days. This company has many parts for Ducati and Moto Guzzi that are almost impossible to buy elsewhere. Strongly recomended https://www.stein-dinse.biz/
My local Ducati dealer told me that they were not available from them or Ducati in Italy. There is a substitute part, which i bought but does not fit. I have been on with this callange for 6 months!
Part is listed as 55910031A. They're showing as being readily available? There is another number for the 2000 996 which is now obsolete? The 996S was only a model year 2001 bike though, so if that's what you have then it should be clear cut.
I bought the 55910031A part for £15.35 + postage. It is the wrong shape and cannot be fitted hence was returned. The correct part numbers for 916 to 998, all variants, is either 55910042A or 55920042A. I bought the latter , brand new in its box from Stein Dinse in Germany. I was expecting the usual post Brexit customs bollocks but it arrived in 2 days. Maybe i was just lucky
